Social News Mrs. Clyde Cannon, Editor Phone 434-M Dessert Bridge Party j Given By Mrs. Cline j Mrs. Ray Cline delightfully en- j tertained with a dessert bfridge \ party at her home last Wednesday! evening in honor of her bridge: club, a recent bride, and other guests. The Christmas motif was carri-1 ed out for the party with festive arrangements of holly and mistle toe, in the refreshments served at tables set up and appointed for the bridge games, and in the tallies! used for the count of scores. After several progressions of: bridge Mrs. Howard Hawkins was j awarded the high score prize and j second high was won by Mrs. Era-! est Gore. The hostess also remem- j bered Mrs. John Snoddy, Jr., bride of November, with an honor gift, i Club members present included j Mrs. Wade Britt, Mrs. Howard> Hawkins, Mrs. John Sullivan and j Mrs. Clyde Bobo. Other guests! were Mrs. John Snoddy, Jr., Mrs. j Ernest Gore, Mrs. M. S. Laugh- j xidge, Jr., and Mrs. J. E. Evans. j o Shiflet Home Scene Of Party Wednesday j Mrs. W. S. Shiflet was hostess i with a bridge party at her home on j North Madison street last Wednes-j day afternoon honoring members j <of her bridge club and several ad ditional guests. Three tables were appointed for play with lovely arrangements of Christmas greenery and candles forming a background in the holi day motif. The tallies used for the games were also in keeping with the season. Following several progressions' of bridge Mrs. Arthur Young, of, Glen Alpine was awarded the high; score prize with second high j going to Mrs. R. K. Davis. Visitor's | high score was won by Mrs. Noah j Orders, of Glen Alpine, with se- j cond high being won by Mrs. Al-1 bert Shiflet, of Old Fort. A delightful salad and sweet j course was served by the hostess i to Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Young, Mrs. J. j C. Rabb, Mrs. J. O. Laughridge and Mrs. J. F. Miller club members, and to Mrs. Shiflet, Mrs. Orders, Mrs. C. V. Lael, of Glen Alpine, Mrs. W. Ray Smith Jr., Mrs. Roy Davis, Mrs. M. S. Laughridge, Jr., i and Mrs. Rowe Mauney, additionalj guests to the party. o Church School Class Holds Yule Party Members of the Daughters of j the Susanna Wesley church school; class of First Methodist church, | ■were hostesses to mothers of the j class members, and adopted mo-! thers, at a Christmas party held in the church hut last Wednesday evening. Plans for the party were onder the direction of Mrs. C. Har ry McCall and 80 class members »nd guests were in attendance. Mrs. R. R. Cook extended a wel- j come to all present and began the j party by having a hand shakingj contest to acquaint the guests with each other. Miss Dorothy Jo McCall enter tained the group by playing two Christmas Carols on her saxa phone, accompanied by her moth er, Mrs. Harry McCall at the piano. Miss Pollyanna Atkins, repdered a vocal solo on the Christmas theme, also accompanied by Mrs. McCall. Mrs. Ingram Holland gave two humorous readings and was award ed a great deal of applause by those present. Several games and contests, led by Mrs. McCall and Mrs. E. W. Parker, Jr., were enjoyed, follow ed by refreshments of tea, cookies and mints being served by several class members. A tribute was paid to all teach ers of the church school class who j have contributed so much to the class in the past year. These teach ers include, Mrs. J. F. Jonas, Mrs. R. I. Corbett, Mrs. John Hoyle, Jr., Mrs. J. C. Rabb and Mrs. Pat Da vis. A Christmas gift was presented Miss Mary Belle Blackburn, presi dent of the class and gifts were also given Miss Carrie Earley and Mrs. Elizabeth Pruett, guests at the Home for the Aged, and spec ial guests of the party. J Women Of The Church Hold Circle Meetings Circles of the Women of the Church of First Presbyterian chur ch met last Monday as follows: Afternoon Circle Number One met at the home of Mrs. George McCall, on New Street, Monday af ternoon with 11 members present and one visitor, Dr. Carl McMui* ray. Mrs. Lloyd Miller, chairman, pre sided over the business session at which time the Circle voted to do nate funds toward helping to take care of the lunches served to needy children at the Marion Central School lunch room. Mrs. Miller also presented the program based on the Gospel of Saint John entitled "The Parting Discourse, The Priestly Prayer." Following the meeting the hos tess served a sweet course with ac cessories, to carry out the Christ mas motif. Afternoon Circle Number Two! met at the home of Mrs. L. A. Neal' on Monday afternoon, with Mrs. j Guy Kirby, Jr., as associate hos- j tess. Mrs. B. A. Dickson, chairman, | presided during the business ses-j sion with 19 members and three I visitors answering roll call. A col-j lection of $27.00 was received and i the Circle voted to donate funds to ! I help carry on the program at Cen tral School for serving lunches to several needy children. Mrs. J. W. Streetman, Sr., pre sented the afternoon devotional and Mrs. Allie Blythe gave, in a most interesting way, the Survey article. Th hostesses -served a delicious ?weet course following the meet- ■ ng. Visitors for the afternoon in cluded Dr. C. W. McMurray, Mrs. Paul Story, president of the Wo men of the Church and Mrs. L. E. reasley, of Columbus, Georgia, j niece of Mrs. Cora Cochrane. Night Circle Number One met at the home of Mrs. James Kelly, Wil kinson on Monday evening with Mrs. J. L. Gourley Jr., as co-hcs tess. Mrs. Wayne Copenhaver, chair man, presided at the meeting and 3uring the business session plans ivere completed for helping an el derly couple and a young girl at Christmas. Miss Elsie House gave a most in vesting program taken from the Gospel of Saint John. Mrs. Wade Pyatt, a visitor to the meeting and a native of Sweden entertained the group by giving an iccount of how Christmas is cele jrated in Sweden. Following the program Christ mas carols were sung, games were enjoyed and gifts were disstributed from under the Christmas tree. Refreshments, carrying out the holiday motif were served to 22 guests including three visitors which were, Dr. C. W. McMurray, Mrs. Paul Story and Mrs. J. 0. Wil liams, of Black Mountain, mother af Mrs. Wilkinson. Night Circle Number Two met at the home of Mrs. Raymond Robin son on Morganton Road with 15 members and one visitor, Dr. C. W. McMurray, present. Mrs. George G. Ross, chairman, presided at the meeting and during the business portion plans were made for members of the Circle to serve the annual supper for the Men of the Church in January. Mrs. George Kirkpatrick told several short stories in keeping with Christmas, and Mrs. James Lancas ter read the Christmas story from the Bible for the program session. Following the program, carols were sung and Christmas gifts were exchanged from under the lovely lighted Christmas tree. Dr. McMur ray was presented a gift from the Circle. The hostess served a dessert ] course in keeping with the holi- j day season. Night Circle Number Three met with Mrs. Robert Landis on Mon day evening with Mrs. Harry Hftss kamp as associate hostess. 1 Mrs. Wayne Atkins presided dur ing the business session and among other items of business disposed of the Circle voted to help financially to provide lunches for needy chil drnn at Marion Central School. Mrs. M. S. Laughridge, Jr., told the Christmas story and carols were sung by the group. A sweet course was served by the hostesses in the form of Poin sette ice cream, cake and accessori es.
