VIRGINIA WINS CORN WAR FROM NORTH CAROLINA Raleigh, Dec. 20—North Caro- j lina lost the corn war to Virginia, j But the Tar Heel State harvested! 35 bushels per acre—a state re- j cord. NOTICE OF SALE OF LAND UNDER DEED OF TRUST TAKE NOTICE, that whereas, Thomas Loftis, Jr., a single man, on the 19th day of May, 1947, did execute and deliver to J. N. Morris, Trustee, a deed of trust which is recorded ifi the office of the Regis ter of Deeds for McDowell County, North Carolina, in Deed of Trust book 61, at page 80, conveying the lands hereinafter described to se cure an indebtedness therein de scribed, and in said deed of trust power of sale was given in default of payment of the indebtedness thereby secured. And whereas, the holder of the indebtedness as secured by the a forementioned deed of trust has de manded that the undersigned fore close and sell the land as described in said deed of trust, and as here inafter described, for the purpose of satisfying the indebtedness se cured by said deed of trust. Now, therefore, the undersigned will, on Monday, the 9th day of January, 1950, at 12 o'clock noon, at the Courthouse door, in Marion, McDowell County, North Caroling, ures were used in deciding the win ner of the contest. The contest was based on the biggest improvement in harvest pei acre compared with the average harvest per acre during the 10-yeai period from 1937 through 1948. North Carolina, in the season's final estimate by the service, pro duced 75,565,000 bushels of corn this year. This exceeds last year's record harvest of 69,006,000 bu shels by 10 per cent and tops the 10-year average by more than 42 per cent. The state's highest yield average prior to this year was 31.5 bushels an acre in 1947. Virginia, in harvesting 47 bush els an acre, increased its average over the 10-ye»r period by 19.2 bushels. North Carolina's average yield for the base period was 21.8 bush els an acre, and its gainl3.3 bush els. For both states this year's yields represent an increase of foui bushels over last year. BIRTHS The Office of Vital Statistics es timates that during the first nine months of 1949, 2,669,000 births were registered. The stimate was made on the basis of figures now available. This gives an estimated birth rate for the first nine months of 24.1 per 1,000 population, whicl" would mean, in round numbers, one baby for every twenty couples ii every 1,000 population were made up of 500 couples. The birth rate this year is almost the same as foi the corresponding period of 1948 which was 24.2, the second highesl for the January-September period in more than a quarter of a cen tury. Mr. Crawley says he has found that before he can build up the fer tility of his farm, he must hold and tie down what he has. To do this he has terraced all the cropland. He began this fall to seed the area between every other terrace in close growing and perennial hay crops. Permanent pasture has been seeded, and he has made plans to plant kudzu for supplementing pasture nettt spring. In the woodland area, Mr. Craw i ley is cutting out the Virginia | scrub pine and poor quality oaks ! for fuel and pulpwood. The short I leaf pine, yellow poplar, and other good quality trees are left for seed trees and to grow into saw-timber. !
