Mr. P. Murphy was appointed in, aL:. t" 1 i K I FKOM U1RDT1MES. Mr. Editor : Having seen in the Pron of Aug. 7th an article un der the head of the independent far mer. I thought I would say a few words Farmers, are not independent be cause they won't be. There is the cotton Exchange, the corn Exchange, and many other exchanges simply to rob the producer and consumer, middle-men organized so that the pro ducer shall not sell direct to the con Burner. Qur Congressmen will quar reli over frivolous matters, and pro tect the rings and combiiations, and we farmers quarrel and fight over their election, and then we grunt aud endure it, and they say or thin,k we are fools. The people that toil have the power if they will use it, and, can remedy the great evils ; will we do it? Can the men be found to repre . sent us to say the different exchang es, the liquor traffic, and the present fence law and dog law are not pleas able and profitable to the farmer! Yes, most any candidate will say these evils shaft" be remedied, but when elected he drifts along in the old channel, knowing if I bother with nmnied men I am doomed ; if I tam per with the liquor dealer I am. gone ; if I say the present system of fen cing costs mqre than the stock is now worth, I am gone forever ; and if I say sheep raising is profitable, or can be made so, which would be equivalent to saying, worthless dogs rnust die, I had as well fold my po litical hands across my breast and say, dead I Can not our farmers' organization remedy these evils? Give us men with backbone to do what is best for their constituents regardless of self interests. Well, we are disposed to grumble, ana grumble we will ; but if our law makers don't do something to lessen the number of dogs, we must abandon the idea of even try ing to raise sheep. I wisfc Mr. Kicker wduld kick at the dogs and accomplish a$ much as he did when be kicked at the babies, or the mothers. Who is Francis? Hard times wants a wife. I don't know whether Fran, cis would suit me or not. She seems to know something about the Script ures, and I believe she would like to preach ; but I don't mind that, for if she comes here and shares with cue, she won't have much time to preach. Now, Mr. Kicker. I am not Jealous, but when acouple quarrel so much before they are married, they are apt to fight afterwards, you know. I am not of a Jealous nature, but on ly advising you for your good. Haboximes. Sept. 9, 1891. UQBrX BRIEFS. Why thp Roxobel Briefs are printed the writer can not for not the life of him tell.
