Event will Begin Thanksgiving- r mid Continue.XJiroMg-li April IBeuutiful Trophies. J. A. SHERRARD, Manaflcr, HE opening of the enlar ged nine-hole course is an important feature in cbn nfiot.ion with firolf at Pinehurst this season ; an indication of the con- stantlv increasinsr DODulaiitv of the game here. It is no exaggeration to state that nearly all of the visitors either play golf or are interested in the game. Hundreds of young and old of all classes are includ ed in the ranks of the ardent devotees and in addition, there are many who find continual pleasure in watching the play or thronging the club house to mingle with the players. The Saturday after noon teas are informal occasions which draw together congenial companies which tax the capacity of the spacious Club House. Golf is talked on the Vil lage streets, in the hotel lobbies and around the cottage tea table ; it is the Prince of Games here. The long or eighteen hole course, is over 5500 yards in length and for years it has beeu pronounced by experts-''un-questionably the finest in the South, the equal of many of the best Northern courses, the superior of most of them."' It is replete in natural and artificial hazards, and looked after with scrupu lous and intelligent care. The putting greens are of sanded clay and the equal of them is not to be found else where. They are in short, "perfection" in every meaning of the word, and the majority of players prefer them to the grass greens of the North. The newly completed nine-hole course is nearly 3000 yards long, and as com plete in every particular, save length, as the longer course, and it appeals espe cially to many players who prefer to play only nine-hole rounds. The Club House with the additions completed last season, is now more than adequate to meet requirements. The bunding includes a large lobby and lounging room with a cheery fireplace, locker and toilet rooms for both men and women, a ladies retiring- room, a wide veranda on the lower, and as pacious bal cony on the upper floor, where also is lo cated the light, sunny and delightful observatory room. As a natural consequence with this superb equipment, Pinehurst has each year drawn golfers of National promi nence from all parts of the country in increasing numbers, and the two great tournaments of the year, the "Midwin ter" anduUnited North and South Cham pionship;" now rank with the few im portant contests of the year, and are fol lowed with keen interest, by the whole golfing world. The links have been the scene of ac- tivity since early in May and the result of the summers work is most gratifying, especially the marked improvement which has been made in the fair green by the creation of additional turf. Some important changes and improvements have also been made upon the long course. This season's tournaments program is without doubt the most important and extensive list of stated fixtures ever an nounced by any Golf Club, and the liber ality in the provisions of trophies has never been approached. The program of stated fixtures begins Thanksgiving day and continues through April, and in addition, many informal events and competitions will be held. The dates set for the Inauguration or Midwinter tournament are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, January 11, 12, 13, 14, and for the United North and South Championship, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sat urday, April, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
