Paper Chase and lance Contest Arranged for tbelSeason. Horseback riding has been immensely popular since the inception of Pinehurst but it has rapidly grown in favor during the past few years owing to the excellent saddle horses furnished by W,II. Horton of the "green briar white" springs, Va. who returns this year. The sandy roads which extend in all directions from Pinehurst, are admirable for riding and they lead to numerous points of interest. While riding is most indulged in by the younger set its de votees are by no means confined to them and many of the older people indulge in it both as recreation and exercise. Owing to the danger of ruining the backs of horses with side saddles the women ride astride at Pinehurst and all are agreed after once trying it, that it is the most healthful, safest and all things considered, the best way to ride. To meet the demand for contests in this line of sport the Management has arrang ed for a series of Paper Chases, Lance Contests and similar events and several dates have been definitely decided upon, for which suitable trophies will be awarded. The first of these will be Lance Con tests on February 1st and 15th in which participants will be called upon to pierce hanging rings while riding past at a brisk gallop. The first of the Paper Chases is an nounced for February 27th. the meet be ing at Village Hall. A trail will be laid out throughout the country-side and not only speed in riding but skill in figuring it out, will be required of those first in at the "death." Other similar contests will doubtless, be arranged by the participants in these events. The addition of a pack of beagle hounds to the kennels will without ques tion, lead to fox and rabbit hunting on horseback and become popular with all lovers of riding, for the country abounds in this game. Liveryman Horton Returns. Lovers of horseback driving, riding and good horses in general, will welcome the announcement of the return of W.II. Horton and his fine string of driving and riding horses. Mr. Horton has had wide experience in catering to the needs of the best class of people and his stable is complete in every particular, fully adapted to the needs of all. - T IF Hiding- Master Coming. Thomas V. Mack of Magnolia, Mass. a riding master of wide experience, will be located at the Livery Stable during the winter for the purpose of giving in struction. This innovation will be appreciated not only by the many who are riding for the first time, but by others who are anx ious to perfect themselves in the sport.
