I PAGE J";fe THE PINEHURST OUTLOOK HOVEL AND ENTERTAINING Program Would Be Incomplete Without Equestrian Gymkhanas Paper Chaea and Saddle Picnics Combine to Make Hiding- One of Moat Popular Recreation 3S ELSEWHERE .gym khanas come and go, blossoming only to fade ; but here like Longfel low's brook, they go on forever. Starting sev eral years ago as a tiny rivulet in the entertain ment program, they have widened into a river which is a de light to all. The secret of it lies not alone in the entertainment which the programs offer, but in their novelty. . To be sure, a number of the events are old favorites, but each season offers some new surprise. Last winter the "danc ing" of the landers was one of the first hits, closely followed by the "overall and bonnet race" and the mere mention of only these two numbers is suggestive of the range and variety of these equestri an events without which no season would now be complete. The landers is self explanatory ; the overall race requiring that riders should don bonnets and over alls, ride to a given point, dismount, put overalls and bonnets on their 3teeds and return to the starting point. The illus tration shows one lad who finished. No wonder he looks pleased and even the horse appears a bit self conscious ! Not all the numbers are ludicrous, the lance and ring pursuit, scarf, relay and other races being fast enough to hold the attention of the most languid; but best of all, the programs are so arranged that they provide for all grades of riders and appeal to all classes of spec tators. In connection, paper chases with the finish in the riding ring, all day saddle picnics and moonlight trips, draw those who love the sport together, combining to make riding one of the most popular recreations which is en joyed by a goodly percentage of visitors. Driving also has come much into favor, since results from the good roads move ment have been achieved, the equipment of the Livery one in which the Village takes especial pride. Howling: Alley Popular Bowling at the Village Alleys is filling pleasant hours, many women among those who frequent the place in the after noon. Plans are being made for the us-ualcompetitions. The Villag-e Market The Batchelder and Snyder Company are again in charge of the Village Mar ket. Just at present the Holiday display of delicacies which delight the northern er is most fascinating. Ttae Colored School The Dickinson Colored School is enjoy ing continued prosperity, its work of keen interest to visitors.
