Rolfe Wins Carolina Tournament
assfsL.* .
IAL E. Rolfe, youthful Chicago
golfer, chalked up his first tour
nament win at Pinehurst last
week when he defeated Clive Alvord,
Hartford, Conn., 5 and 3, in the final
contest of the annual Carolina tourna
ment. The winner qualified close to
the top, and except for a 20-hole
match with R. G. Morrison in the
second round, he had comparatively
easy sailing all the way through. He
was even fours for eleven holes in
defeating C. S. Strout, 9 and 7, in
the first round, and after losing the
first three holes to Morrison in the
second he succeeded in squaring the
contest on the home green and won
on the twentieth when he put his
second shot to within four' feet of
the cup and holed out for a birdie 3.
In his final round match with Alvord,
Rolfe won two of the first three holes
and made the turn 3 up. He lost the
tenth to a par 4, but after halving the
eleventh he won two in a row which
made him 4 up. The fourteenth was
halved and a par 3 on the fifteenth
gave Rolfe the hole and the match.
Rial E. Rolfe, proudly displays the trophy he
garnered in his victory over a strong field
in the annual Carolina Tournament
Alex; W. C. Banta versus H. Newton
Marshall; Robert E. Harlow, the
medalist, versus Francis T. Keating^
T. J. Bray versus C. E. Petot; Rial E.
Rolfe versus C. S. Strout, and R. G.
Morrison versus Joe Hotchkiss, the
first named winning in each instance.
With the exception of Rolfe’s 20-hole
match with Morrison, all contests in
the second round were decided by nar
row margins, each of them being won
by 1 up. Bydolek disposed of Watson
while Bray put Harlow out of the run-,
ning and Alvord eliminated Banta, '
and the semi-finals found Alvord
against Bydolek whom he defeated
3 and 2, while Rolfe opposed Bray and
defeated him 5 and 3.
Other division winners were W. O.
Smith, who defeated A* M. Bright, 7
and 5, in the second, while R. J.
Francisco scored a 2 and 1 victory
over H. B. Davidson and carried off
the silverware in the third division.
Joe Hotchkiss won the first division
consolation trophy; T. Russell Brown
the second, and B. Lester Tyrrell the
third.
The luck of the draw for match-play in the first division
brought W. E. Watson against Charles Sebring; Joseph
Bydolek versus H. C, Fownes 2nd.; Clive Alvord versus C. G.
