' ■■■ ■* Bride-Elect Is Feted At Party In Scotland Neck Scotland Neck- -Miss Elizabeth Hines, whose marriage to Gene House will take place December 11 in the First Presbyterian church of Roanoke Rapids, was honored with a supper party at the Holly Oak Club in Scotland Neck last week by Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Winslow. The living and dining rooms were decorated throughout with pine boughs, oak leaves and fall flowers, creating a lovely au tumn setting. Approximate fifty young friends of Miss Hines and Gene House were present including Mr. and Mrs. Herbert M. Brow er, Jr., of Weldon. Mrs. John Miller of Bluefield, West Virginia, mother of Mrs. Guy Leedy, came Sunday for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Leedy and family of Roanoke Avenue. Students Give Fashion Review At Club Meeting Woodland—Mrs. Clyde Jenkins, home economics teacher in the Woodland-Olney School present ed a group of her pupils in a fashion review at the meeting oi the Woodland Junior Wo man’s Club, in the Clubhouse Tuesday evening. Mrs. S. P. Taylor, vice-presi dent called the meeting to order and presided during the routine business session. Mrs. Raymond Benthall. pro gram chairman introduced Mrs. Jenkins and her class of girls, who have just completed a sew ing project. Jean Page read the fashion forecast and cai’ed attention of details of style and workman ship in each garment as it was modeled by the maker. Blouses, skirts and short coats of match ing and contrasting fabrics were featured. t Mesdame? Dale Bell. Frank Holoman. Betty Page, and Miss Dare Griffin, hostesses, served pie and coffee during the social hour. Miss Elizabeth Hines spent Monday visiting in Norfolk, Vir ginia. Tommy Smith and Miss Doro thy Mountford attended the air show in Rocky Mount Sunday. Turner Speaks To PTA Group Woodland—N. L. Turner, su perintendent of Northampton county schools, discussed the "New Look in Education." at the Parent Tercher Association meeting in the Woodland-Olney High School auditorium Thurs day evening. Turner discussed advance ments made in the field of edu cation and stressed the inade quacy of buildings and equip ment. He urged that more at tention be given these physical needs. Attendance honors went to the third, seventh and tenth grades. Refreshments were served at the close of the program. Julius Hall, of Roanoke. Virgin ia, father of Mrs. bill McClung, was a weekend visitor with Mr. and Mrs. McClunt of Jackson Street. Mrs Ha’l who has been visiting her daughter several days returned to Roanoke with Mr. Hall and took her twin grandchildren. Becky and Patty, with her f<jr a short visit. Study Club Will Call Off Annual Christmas Meet The Christmas meeting of the Roanoke Rapids Study Club has been called off out of respect for the lata Mrs. A. Meikle, who was a beloved member of this organization. Through the years of its existance, one of the high lights of the club Year has been the December meeting tradition ally held in the home of Mrs. Meikle. At their regular meeting Fri day afternoon in the home of Mrs. M. S. Broun on Roanoke Avenue, it was decided not to have the Christmas meeting this year. However, the club voted to continue its Christmas pro ject of sending gdts to the Coun ty Sanatorium m Halifax as a memorial to Mrs. Meikle. Mrs. Gordon L. Price, presi dent, was in charge and during the business session Mrs. Frank Cole was appointed leader of the Scout troop which the Study Club sponsors. The opera “Carmen" was the topic for study during the after, noon and paper prepared by Mrs. Allmond S. White was read by Mrs. Broun in the absence of Mrs. White. Junior Contract Club Meets With Mrs. Burrows Enfield — The Junior Contract Bridge Club met at the home of Mrs. Harold Burrows on Fri day evening of last week. Ar rangements of fall flowers were used throughout the home. At the close of the game, high score prize was won by Mrs. Collins Cuthrell. and second high and bingo was won by Mrs. Ro bert Ivey. A sweet course was served to the following members and guests: Mesdames Leon Madrey, Robert Ivey. J. Q. Hofler, D. B. Barnes, R. E. Shervette, Jr., T. E. Marshall, W. B Burchette, Sidney Randolph, Herman Fu trell, R. W. Baugham, George Randolph and Collins Cuthrell. Jerry Leedy Had A Party Jerry Leedy celebrated his fifth birthday Saturday with a party at his home on Roanoke Avenue. Jerry had the traditional birth day cake with merry-go-round candle holders bearing five light ed randies. He blew out all the candles on the first trial. The children enjoyed games and favors presented by the host. Jerry was delighted with his gifts and the pictures his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Leedy, had made of him and Ms party. Enfield Baptist Ladies Bible Class Meets Enfield — The Baptist Ladies Bible Class met Tuesday even ing in the home of Mrs. W. A. Pope on Miin Street. The Thanksgiving motif was carried out in decorations. Mrs. Stella Broach presided , and Mrs. U. H. Hardison led the devotional. After leading in the opening praver, Mrs. Hardison read a few verses of scripture and talked or. 'Prayer and and Thanes”—closing her re marks with a Thanksgiving poem. During the business discussion it was decided to exchange in expensive Christmas gifts, as in former years, at tne December meeting, which will be held in the home ot Mrs. Robert .Kim ball. At this time $13.45 was donated on the Church building fund. A report of the sick was heard, and plans were made for several members to visit the County Home cn Tuesday after noon, at which time they were to carry a basket of fruit to one of the inmates who was sick. After the meeting was adjourn ed, games were enjoyed and prizes awarded. The hostess, assisted by her daughter.
