J. Stew art, the wounding of Stewart and the threatening to kill Mrs. Stew art. Robbers Take Heavy Safe A heavy safe was removed by truck from a New Bern grocery store by robbers on Sunday night with $700 in it. Nothing else was stolen. $103,ODD Charlotte Fire Loss of $100,000, covered by insurance, resulted at Charlotte, Monday, in the burning oj Caro lina Auto Supply company’s buildihg and stock of auto access ories. Exact origin of the flame is not known. Killed in Pistol Duel A pistol duel in the sandhills near Wagram, Monday, resulted in death for Russel Leviner, 29, and prison for Egbert Kennedy, 35. Leviner was trying to end Kennedy’s attentions to Mrs. Bertha Driggers, sister of Leviner. Henderson Bar Dean Dies Thomas M. Pittman, 74, dean of the Hendersonville dar and widely known in the northeast of the state, died Monday. Koontz Succeeds Younce H. L. Koontz, Greensboro, was on Monday named by Governor Max Gardner as solicitor in the 12th district to succeed G. A. Younce, who resigned Sunday as result of his part in the accidental death of J. A. Leonard, Davidson county sheriff, early Friday. Belhaven Leader Killed John A. Wilkinson, 67, Bel haven business leader, died in a Ra’eigh hospital, Sunday, from injuries received in a crash be tween his car and one driven by Jake Allen, regro. Allen is held under $1,000 bond. Sylva High Claims County Championship The Sylva High basketeers broke loose Friday night with a barrage of shots that took the S.C. I. cagers under by the decisive score of 35 to 20. Following this game the Sylva High tossers put in their claim on the county champ ionship having defeated all teams in the county. Time and again throughout the game the plays of the high cagers worked to perfection, and at no time were they in danger of losing their scalps. Green led the onrush for his team mates with 19 points. Bryson play ing his first game on the Sylva High varsity turned in a game that did credit to his team and himself. Captain Sutton saw action for only a few minutes of the last period having been confined to the bench on account of a foot injury. Cooke trying to fill the shoes of Reagan, who vacated center, became a thorn in the side ot the S. C. I. players. Alman and Moody turned in a creditable game for the High basketeers. Dickey and Bryson were the outstanding S. C. 1. players with six points each. Opening Of The Bi centennial Celebration President Hoover will officially open the nine-months, nation wide George Washington Bicent ennial celebration at noon (E.S.T.) February 22, when he will deliver his George Washington addresses before a joint meeting of Congress assembled in the House of Rep resentatives in the Capitol. The Judges of the Supreme Court, members of the Cabinet, foreign diplomats and many other dis tinguished visitors also will be pre sent, and the address will be car ried to every corner of America over a nation wide hook-up. Following his address. President Hoover will be escorted to the East steps of the Capitol, and will give the signal for the singing of “America” by a chorus of ten thousand voices. It is expected that millions of people will join in this “sing” as it comes over the air. The great chorus gathered at the Capitol will be conducted by Wal ter Damrosch and will be accom panied by the United States Army, Navy and Marine bands will play as a unit under the direction of J. Philip Sousa* An “inaugural” crowd is expected to be on hand for these ceremonies. Alter luncheon, President Hoover, accompanied by the members of the United States Geo rge Washington Bicentinnial Com mission will go to Mount Vernon to lay a wreath on the tomb of the Father of His Country in the name of a united nation. At 3 P. M. there willbe exercised at the Washington Monument under the auspices of the various patriotic societies in the District of Columbia. In the evening the George Washington Colonel Costum Ball will be held at the Mayflower Ho tel under the auspices of the U. S. Gang Leader Slain Vincent Coll, gang leader re cently acquitted for the slaying of a boy, five, in a spray of bullets in a gang war in Harlem, was shot and killed in a N. Y. drugstore Sunday night, the slayer escaping. Japs Attack Chinese Fcit With 55 warships and a force of marines the Japanese during the week launched heavy attacks on the Woosung forts guarding the river mouth to Shanghi. Chinese resisted vigorously there and in the Shanghi areas. $250,000 Suit Asked Damage of $250,000 is asked from Bishop James Cannon, Jr., in a suit filed Monday by Romark Publishing Company, N.Y. claim ing Cannon conspired to stop distribution of the company’s periodical which held attacks on the bishop. * Writes Own Death Story Writing a detailed story of 'his own suicide, Paul Ellis, editor < f Daytona Beach, Fla., carried out the plan. The story was written. Mrs. Judd is Convicted Late Monday night a jury at Phoenix, Arizona, found Winnie Ruth Judd guilty of the murder of Agnes Leroi. Hanging is set for Feb. 23.
