THE RURALITE Vol. VI Sylva, N. C., Tuesday, Feb., 23 1932 No. 42 State News Torch Murders Unsolved Murders of Burton Hensley and Woodrow Wilson, of Bald Knob, N. C., whose mutilated bodies were found in the embers of an Arkansas swamp fire in 1930, are unsolved. Arkansas authorities stated Monday they will free C. Rex King of the murder charges on basis of proof he was in Texas. Lawyer Drowns In Creek In an epileptic seizure, Archie Latham, Currituck lawyer, fell in to South creek, Monday morning and was drowned, his sister was powerless to aid him. Burned In Feed Barn Entering a blazing loft to fight the flames, Hobart Fornes, 48, was completly charred, Monday morn ing, on a farm near Washington. Dump Big Liquor Cargo A truck and trailer, bearing Michigan license plates, left the road in Dunn, Monday morning trying to round a curve too fast. Two men escaped a trailing car. Officers dumped out 2,000 gallons of bonded whiskey. Acquitted Of Slaying A coroner’s jury at Rocky Mount, last week, exonerated Tom Jenkins in the killing of Walter Reed, negro who tried to enter his home. Child Killed By Car On the way to Sunday School at Haw River, Ervin Phillips, 5, darted in front of John Andrew’s car and was fatally hurt. Tri-State Doctors Meet The Carolinas and Virginia sent over 200 doctors to Raleigh the first three days of the week for the tri-state medical meeting, Dr. Beverley R. Tucker, Rich mond presiding. <9> + Early Action Expected On Paving Highway 106 Hard surfacing of the five-mile stretch on Highway 106 between the Sylva Country club and Cullow hee is expected to begin in a very short time. Every indication points to early action by the State High way Commission. The matter of the highway’s ex act location through the college campus will be taken up with the officials. The report of two locating engineers, who have been survey ing the road link and collecting data concerning its territory, will be made at the highway depart ment meeting Wednesday. A rep resentative of the department re cently expressed the opinion that the paving of the link would tegin immediately. Highway No. 106, which con nects with No. 10 at Sylva and traverses southern Jackson county to the South Carolina line, is one of the most important road links in W. N. C., traversing a section important in agriculture, industry, education and scenic beauty. The Cullowhee valley is one of the most fertile farming sections in W. N. C. and Hamburg township, at at the foot of the Blue Ridge, is noted all over the Southland for its splendid truck crops especially cabbage. At East LaPorte is located the Blackwood Lumber Company, with one of the largest hardwood sawmills in the State. Western Carolina Teachers College is lo cated nine miles from Sylva, at Cullowhee. It has often been pointed out as the only State insti tution in North Carolina without the advantages of a paved road. Among the many outstanding natural objects of beauty along this route are, the High falls of the Tuckaseigee river and Whiteside Mountain, the highest sheer precipice east of the Rockies. Whiteside Mountain is located at Cashiers in the beautiful Sapphire country. Well-known tourist resorts and summer camps dot this region. Among these are Fairfield Inn and High Hampton Inn. The great Smoky Mountain National Park is destined to play a big part in increasing the popular ity of State Highway 106 in the years to come, for No. 106 is the Court In Session Judge Stack To Preside Jackson county Superior Court convened yesterday morning with Judge A. M. Stack presiding. The term is for two weeks and the dock et contains a sufficient number of cases to consume the entire period Five homicide cases are on docket, among them are Ray Fisher, who killed Will Ensley, locomotive engineer for the Sylva Paperboard Company on Nov.25, Jim Bowers who killed Lucius Jones the latter part of November, Jim Bryson who killed Wiley Galloway of Glenville, Jim Under wood charged with slaying Charlie Stewart on Pine Creek, Horn buckle, Indian, who shot another Indian of the same name last sum mer. 60 Gallon Still Captured A 60 gallon still was captured in Cullowhee township>arly Friday. Hindenburg to Run Again Paul Von Hindenburg, war lead er and president of the German republic for eight years, will run for another term, he recently an nounced. Irish Election Killings On eve of a general election, two government speakers were killed at Foxhill, Ireland, last week and another was fired on from ambush. 13 Theatre Managers Held Their Sunday charity shows un interrupted, 13 theatre managers were arrested in Atlanta, last week for blue law violations. Holds Mission Study Course The Womans Missionary Union of the Baptist Church is meeting this week at the Church in a Miss ion Study Class on Monday Thurs day and Friday afternoon at three o’clock, They are takiny up Dr. J. B. Lawrence’s latest book on Home mission, “Mission In The Bible’’, Mrs. Fied Hooper is to teach the class. Judge Harwood Arrested Judge John Harwood, Bryson City, suspended from duty, faced a preliminary trial in Raleigh, on charges of changing and mutilating revenue department records in connection with embezzlement charges against his daughter, Lola, formerly employed by the depart ment.
