MAY 4. 1955 Sc HI· Κ Γ·Ι··>-.»'< ι·. Bucksvílle Was Once Thriving Port 'Past Glory Of Old Section Recalled By DELL GAUT Today, as one wanders down' >y the river at Bucksville, it is lard to imagine that the quiet tittle farming section was once a; jusy port city, its woods ringing «ith-cries oí "Timber", and the, >cream of a tortured rip saw. | Up and down the Waccamaw River, one could at one time see jreat saling ships bound for dis-, ■ant ports with lumber cut and jawed at Bucksville. Today, an occasional small craft sails smoothly up the river, barely reminisant of the old days. I Where yesterday, sawyers, sweated and swore over a par ticularly clumbersome piece of log, today, farmers coax their sleepy mules over their fields. Yesterday, Bucksvil'e was full of life and future. Today, Bucks ville is dead, with only a pair of chimneys to tell of glorious days of pomp and splendor long gone. To traoe Bucksville, one must begin with Bucksport, Maine, founded more than 100 years ago by Jonathan Buck, who arrived i nthe Sally, found the forests good and set up the first saw mill in that territory. It was his grandson, Henry, who looke'd about over Horry County's wooded lands and de cided to make his home here.1 Henry was in his 30s when he1 bought the land about what was to be known as Bucksville, pur-1 chased slaves, and settled down to become a ship builder of re-1 nown. Jusí as his grandfather, Jona than, had brought the first saw mill to Bucksport, Maine, Hen ry brought the first saw mill t Horry County. Henry's hous •till stands, solidly rooted on the banks of Waceemaw. The original Buck homo Is now owned by S. C. Representa tive Henry Lee Buck, Henry's great grandson. In the beginning, Henry own ed 500 slaves, when the War Be tween the States was declared. He had wide farmlands, as well as his lumber and shipbuilding businesses. This first Henry was not only prominent in commercial affairs, but took an active part in State government as a Senator. Three successive generations of Bucks ~¿ve followed their ancestor to He State Senate. Henry's sons, at the outbreak of the war, became Confederate uitiocrs, although their father was originally a Union man. Young Henry Lee became a cap ;«»n of th-; Confederacy at the age of 18. The war was declared over, and Henry's slaves were freed. The whole way of living was changcd, but the Bucks continu ed to work the woods at Bucks ville. They revived their New England friendships and trade oetween the two sections flour ished. Bv that time, Buck's second ! ·ηί!Ι -vas in operation. Today it » is called "Middle Mill' and is marked only by the stately red brick chimney that thrusts its " head 75 to 100 feet through the > surrounding undergrowh. e Today it too is dead, but in léli, KUttljr mr did th· ÍmÉÉ fires within It di·.
