Subscript! .oo per year, in Advance. - - FRIDAY2JANUARY, 31, 1913 THE CALL OF THE SOUTH. It has been nearly half a century since Horace Greeley gave utterance to what has now pecome a famous adage, "Go west young man and grow up with the country.' At that time Mr. Greeley was undoubt ed correct in his advice. But since that time conditions have changed. From time immemorial the re- BSZtt home, have always moved j in the direction of the setting sun. From the time when humanity was start ed on its first pilgrimage, from east ward in the Garden of Eden : it has continued to move westward. But the dream of the Utopia of the west lias changed. Jo longer does the great west hold out to the adventur ones with the pioneer spirit the same alluring prospects of free homestead lands and golden oppor tunity in a country of a brilliant lull lit;, luugci uuca uaimo uuci to give her best for the asking in a section of original forest and virgin soil, unmarred by the hand of man. Those who heeded the words of wisdom from Mr. Greeley did well in applying his advice. Eut; "The golden opportunity is never offered twice; Seize then the hour when fortune smiles and duty points the way." The day of opportunity in the west is forever gone. The ear of wiser ones of the race have heard the acll of South and already are turn ing toward herbroad acres and sunny skies, with longing eyes. The tide of mankind is turning and the con quest of the South has begun. She of fersunlimit ed opportunities inevery line of human endeavor. Nature in her bounty has peculiarly bless ed t lis section and the South needs men vho will obey the divine com- manu to get dominion over nature. T stood upon the topmost pinnacle of a lofty mountain massively sub lime and caught a vision of tht South and the glory that will one day be hers. I gazed upon a pano rama of grand mountain peaks and lofty ridges, of beautiful vales and fertile valleys, where streams of purest crystal were winding their way toward the sea. I saw the timbers removed, filling the coffers K)f a happy , people with jingling vcoin, and in their place were fields of glasses feeding millions of fatten ing cattle. I saw the bowels of the earth penetrated and made to belch forth a wealth of almost every, min eral and precious metal. I saw the pleasure seeker and , the tired and weary from every quarter of the Jjobe hurrying here to enjoy our matchless climate, our world famous hospitality and : to .motor over our smooth and well kept roads. I saw thedancing streams Jiarnessed and. turning millions of ; ceaseless spindles. And out of the wilderness were reared great cities of .busy industry. And I .was in thpmiHstnf thft drpntpst ndrinnltnr- al and industrial, section of the -world; the paradise of the horticul turist and agriculturist, the home of the artisan and Mecca of . the . 1 .
