JACKSON GO. JOURNAL > - - - - - - - - ? tDA* TOMPKINS, - - Editor | Published Weekly By the JACKSONOOUNTY JOURNAL CO Entered as second elass matter ?t Sylva, N. C. ~ . S ** ? 106-BUILD IT Once n?ore this paper feels iaipell ?; ed to call attention to the necessity, ?? the urgent necessity, of the imme j tfiate surfacing of Highway 106. The tew* rnijes from Cashier's Valley to 111 the South Carolina line is naturally ; and logically a part of the state vi highway system. It should be take* . over and accepted as such, now. The highway commissioner of this dis , triet has promised that this would be done. It should be accomplished with - out delay. With this short stretch added to ?? Highway 106, it becomes a main trunk link of highway from South ; Carolina, through the mountains and 'i the Park, to Tennessee; and is of \ great importance to the state and the " adjoining states. This highway is the route over . which the products of field a?d for est of some of the fairest lands of all ? Western North Carolina must come to market. At present the people are blocked for months during each year, and the wheels of commerce stopped, : to the great injury of Jackson coun ty,-of Sylva, and of the whole of this : en<J*ef the state. , , This highway is one of the great est of all the scenic highways, of Western North Carolina and, traver ses a country of incomparable beau ty. It is of importance to the state as a tourist route. This highway is the only means of ' ingress- and egress to the Cullowhee State,Normal School; and the law provides' that the highways must be constructed to the state institutions. The people of Sylva and Cullowhee townships graded the present road i ?? from Sylva to Cullowhee, before the . state construction started. The people of'Jackson county paid half the cost . of grading from the Forks of Tuck " ! a fyigee to Glenville. The County graded the road from Cullowhee to ; the Forks of Tuckaseigee. The county ?; loaned the state highway commission fhte funds with which to surface the road from Tuckaseigee to Dick's Gap; ^and there should be sufficient funds lift' from the loan to complete that surfacing and a considerable sum left ?ver to apply to the rest of 106. Year in and year out, the people of Jackson county have' been hoping, working, expecting that 106 would be built and?beeome a real highway. ') I* seems that they have exhausted every means at their command, with out taxing Jackson county tp the point of unreasonableness, to secure this road. \ The highway commissioner for this district promised the people of the county, publicly, that "if there was another bond issue, and if he remain is- ed of the highway commission, that be would see to it that 106 was fin ished all the way, with all haste." Doubtless he has no other intention than to fulfill his promise. The people expect it It is now up to the highway com-! mission. The road must be built. To fail to finish it before another winter comes would be tragedy. It can be done. CREAM A HALF DOLLAR THIS WEEK 0. W. Tilson The Chicago Standard price for high quality butter is a half dollar per pound this week. This price is the priee paid to our farmers by Carolina Creamery for butterfat in good clean cream not over 4 days old delivered to the creamery manager at the Syl va station in back of Freeze and Fleeman's store building. Mr. Wy man, manager of the Franklin Braneh of the creameiy will get cream at the Sylva Station on Wed nesday afternoon 3 to 5 and Satur day morning 9 to 11 o'clock. Folks, the Asheville Creamery has -put the best cream market in the state at our door in our own county. The manager will dekl direct with the farmers and cream producers will have no middle man services to pay ffor. Our farmers are getting the same priee per pound Macon far mers get. So we have a cream mar .ket just the same as a creamery here, and the creamery is coming as soon as our volume is sufficient to oper-j ate ft braneh plant. So it is up to our tanners to get busy and produce the' -volume of cream not only to main-; ?tain ft central station in the county i ;biit also bring the creamery plant it-1 ::self to our county. You will see from fthe Carolina Creamery ad in this is ?ifeue that they have establihsed the ^market for us, so it's left for us to part for OUf own interest. PRATER MEETING Prayer meeting was conduces^ Wt-d-I nesday evening by Mr. Roberts and, his ball boy.s The service was very! interesting both from a scientific and religious standpoint.
