Published Weekly By DAN TOMPKINS ?rsear s^tionh Carolina vA /W53 ASSOCIATION V DAN TOMPKINS, Editor FDFTORIAI The democratic world may as well prepare for a long and self-sacrificing job. Any man, any woman, any group, be it labor ,or be it capital, tljat is unwilling to make the sacrifice that is demanded if we are to survive, is unworthy of the great traditions of our people, and of the inestimable blessings that have been bought and paid for with the blood and sacrifice of those who have gone before us, and handed down to us as the most'priceless heritage any people ever ommToH onTnirV\oi?o i i rvr\n Via fn nn fViin nn Vi ' I 'h apo cuijrniicic upvui uiic xatc ui tii.10 cai uu. xnuoc are the values that are at stake in this conflict, this conspiracy, this revolution. ED REED i" Ed Reed will be remembered in Sylva for a long time, by many things; but The Journal will remember him as a good neighbor, a staunch friend, and for the kindliness of his heart. We can never forget that, when the editor of this paper was with the American Expeditionary Forces in France, and there was nobody at our home except the women folks, and when Ed Reed was our closest - neighbor, how kind, how thoughtful, how helpful was this good neighbor. Prompted only by his natural kindliness and with a touch of patriotism, and helpfulness to the family of an American soldier across the waters, he proved himself to be a true friend and the best of neighbors, bv Derforminff tasks that these ^ r - X O women could not perform for themselves, without any reward, or hope of reward. And so we feel impelled to place this tribute upon his bier. "As ye have done it unto the least of these, ye have done it unto Me." OUR LIBERTY IN EXTREME PERIL As Mr. D. Hiden Ramsey so graphically pointed out, at Cullowhee, Tuesday evening, and as all informed and thinking people know, the precious liberties we now enjoy are in extreme peril, and there is the gravest danger that the pall of a second "Dark Ages" is about to fall upon what we know as the civilized world. The British Empire, bulwark of civilization and stabilization in the world for many centuries, has not yet fallen; but she is wobbly and tottering. The German offensive down into Greece continues. All the gains that the British have made into Northern Africa have now been lost. We may expect to see the Mediterranean become a Nazi lake. London was subjected, only last night, to the most terrific aerial bombardment that any major city has ever undergor*<\ For eight long hours the German bomber roarec. uirough, the skies and poured uncounted tii( \io<inda of tons of explosives and fire bombs upon the world's largest city filled the hospitals and the morgues with thousands of men, women and children, and left great sections of the city but a shambles. This, mostly to give the world a new example of how far German frightfulness will go, in this attempt of the new paganism to conquer the world and to destroy Democracy and Christianity. A pact is just concluded, whereby Japan is assured that in event of her becoming involved in war, Russia will not strike in the back. That, as far as Japan and Russia can trust each other, opens the way for the Nipponese to strike like a reptile and we may expect to see her strike, at nay time now, toward the Dutch East Indies, Singapore, and perhaps at the Philippines. While this is in' progress, certain Americans are trying to build up huge fortunes to add to the immense wealth they already possess, which fortunes would be worth absolutely nothing in case of a Ger man victory. Certain American labor groups are maneuvering for better positions in the game of get-allyou-can; not realizing that a German ictory would be the worst set-back that American could possibly conceive. Other Americans are going, their foolish, frivolous way, apparently heedless of the fact that the world is about to crash about their ears. To your knees, Oh Amarica! And then arise in your might, resolved that no unselfishness can be too costly, no sacrifice too great, no effort Xoo gigantic to preserve the precious things of the spirit that have made and preserved us a nation. Wake up, America! Before it is eternally too late. Everything that you love and cherish, every privilege that you enjoy, every luxury that is yours, will go down with the British Empire, if she falls! \ , ' A ^ ?r'- *V^ ' y * rB?
