Sanford’s education program. S. Cliff Tillman, Person County Tax Collector, has just been appointed by Superior Court Resident Judge Hamilton H. Hobgood as Justice of the Peace for Roxboro Township, it was learned today. As the mornings become cooler, I can feel summer com ing to an end, which also means the end of peach season in the Southeast. Earlier this week I enjoyed one of the last of its of ferings, a delicious, juicy ripe one straight from a peach farm in McBee, South Carolina. In case you’re ever in the area and don’t want to sound like a foreigner, it’s pronounced MAC-bee, with the stress on the first syllable. Don’t ask me why. 1 checked with my co-worker Phyliss Boatwright, who grew up eight miles from McBee, and she also said MAC-bee is the only way she’s ever heard it pro nounced. So my mother had picked up some of those peaches in McBee GRErS MATTER GREY PENTECOST on the way back from visiting her mother and other family members in her hometown of Camden. In fact, the McLeod Farms packing house, tucked into the farm’s peach orchards along Hwy. 1, has always been a stop during our summer trav els to and from Camden. Each time we’d bring back at least a few boxes full. Therefore, at an early age, for me South Carolina became synonymous with great peaches. Now we all know Georgia is the Peach State. I always thought perhaps the Palmetto State should at least share some of that glory and recognition, hut figured Georgia must have proved itself more worthy of the fruit-based moniker some time long ago. However, I became even more convinced that the title had been given to the wrong state while grocery shopping one day in Athens, Ga. I was at Kroger and decided for some reason to check out the little sticker on the peaches. I couldn’t believe it. Even those peaches were from South Carolina. Now I understand that if you’re looking for the real deal you would probably hit up a roadside stand somewhere out in the country But I thought the Peach State ought to be able to supply its own grocery stores with its signature fruit. I still haven’t had the oppor tunity to try a fresh Georgia peach, that I know of When I do, I hope, for the sake of the state’s good name, that it has produced a peach as fine as those in little McBee. www.personcountylife.com Your connection to Roxboro and Person County With the start of the new fis cal year, beginning Saturday, July 1, North Carolina residents will shell out money for sales tax on practically everything they purchase.
