VOLUME 115, ISSUE 16 Edwards: Wife’s cancer has returned Pundits debate effect on presidential run BY ERIN FRANCE STATE & NATIONAL EDITOR Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards announced Thursday that he will not be leaving the race, despite a recurrence of his wife’s cancer. “The results of all the tests are that her cancer is back,” Edwards said during a press conference at The Carolina Inn. “It’s no longer curable.” Test results from UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center confirmed Wednesday that Elizabeth Edwards’ metastatic breast cancer has returned as a tumor in her rib. Her cancer is stage four, which is incurable, but treatments such as hor mones or chemotherapy can stop growth or decrease its size. The public reaction to the Edwards’ family announcement is hard to gauge at the moment, say political pundits. “The truth is, I don’t think any of us know how voters are going to react,” Carson taps diverse bunch for Cabinet BY WHITNEY KISLING ASSISTANT UNIVERSITY EDITOR Student Body President-elect Eve Carson is trying to fill her Cabinet with students ranging from insiders to those who never have worked for student government. Carson picked five Cabinet members from a list submitted by i selection committee. Three of those members must be approved jy Student Congress. Juniors Mike Tarrant and Jordan Myers were selected to be student jody vice president and treasurer, respectively. Sophomore Mac Mollison was tapped to be student body secretary. John Edwards said the possibility of dropping out was not considered for very long after a diagnosis was made. “This is the most extremely unselfish person I’ve ever met,” he said in reference to his wife. “All she wanted to talk about... was her children, me and the country.” With the first caucus in lowa on Jan. 14, 2008, lowa voters will be an early indicator for how the rest of the country might respond. “She was quite popular here the last time John Edwards ran for president,” said Dianne Bystrom, director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics at lowa State University. “(It) actu Student Body President-elect Eve Carson formed a staff of people from different backgrounds. Mollison was a senior writer at The Daily Tar Heel and Cunningham is Student Body President James Allred’s chief of staff. Zellner is the only officer to come from within Carson’s cam paign staff an uncommon move, as many student body presidents have selected several workers for top positions. Three of Allred’s officers worked on his campaign. “Asa team, we very much com plement each other,” Carson said, adding that the mix reflects larg er plans. “That was a goal of my campaign, and that will continue to be a goal throughout the year bringing people together from different backgrounds.” The Student Code states that a selection committee of three stu dent government officials and a representative of the student body president-elect review the applica tions. He added that, in polling people, he found a minority of lowans who admire the Edwardses for their decision. “The other opinion is: This guy has a huge amount of courage if he can make a decision like this.” The Edwards family has been through a similar experience before. HEELS FACE A REBUILT TROY BY BRIANA GORMAN SENIOR WRITER EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Two sea sons ago, the Southern California basketball program was a mess. Coach Henry Bibby was fired four games into the 2004-05 season, after eight years with the school that included only two seasons with at least 20 wins. His assistant, Jim Saia, served as interim coach as the TVojans finished the year 12-17 and last in the Pac-10. The program then took a much-needed positive turn when it hired veteran coach Rick Majerus. But less than a week later, Majerus backed out of the job. Enter Tim Floyd.
