These service learning intern ships give students a chance to earn $2,500 throughout the sum mer, she said. The campus organization also teams up with the Office of Undergraduate Research to pro vide three Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships. This sum mer, students are headed to Sierra Leone, Northern Thailand and Guanajuato. Mexico, on three $3,000 fellowships, Huq said. If the Tar Heels can continue their run in the post season, they could again see home games at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Carv during the opening rounds in late May. The finals again will be held in Omaha, Neb. and students could request to go anywhere. “In terms of planning for summer opportunities, it begins pretty early in the spring semes ter with APPLES as well as with other groups across the campus,* Huq said. APPLES also gives students who want to spend their summer in Guadalajara. Mexico, an oppor tunity to study abroad through the Global Service Learning Program. This year, 11 students plan to participate. The program lasts for nine weeks during the summer and focuses on service learning in Mexico. It is the only APPLES summer program that has a fee, similar to other study abroad pro grams where all expenses are paid by the student Huq said. “We offer all of these opportuni tiesevery summer," she added. “For each of these there are interviews and selection processes that take place early in spring semester.’ At the end of the summer, the ON THE BALL ahr Daihi Oar Hrrl Service Learning Initiative aims to provide a way for freshmen to find their niche in service within the college environment. “The students arrive a few days early and participate in different service events within the com munity,’ Huq said. “It gets them acquainted with service at UNC and the Chapel Hill-Durham com munity." Freshman attendees usually arrive about three days before classes start and participate in social and service activities, receive six meals and get a chance to establish friendships before school begins all for S3O. And APPLES officials are already planning for next fall. In the days following welcome week, the organization will co-spon sor an event with Stop Hunger Now, a nonprofit organization in Raleigh. The goal of the event is to pack age one million meals, and those interested in helping can do so in locations throughout the state.
