Sally (Ear Mrrl THE HUGUENOTS: WARM AND FUZZY The Huguenots are easy to pick out in the crowd surrounding the Student Union, with their dapper vintage wear and multi-instru mentalist York Howie’s Beatles style sunglasses; they do not blend in and neither does their music. The band’s charisma is undeni able, and if the music doesn’t make girls fall over, talking to them will. Diversions staff writer Rachel Arnett certainly found out for her selfin a recent chat with the band. The quartet will open for the fabulous Bom Ruffians tonight at Local 506. Diversions: Does being friends cause any tension? Sam Logan: It’s unfortu nate because we always joke about our solo projects once we all break up (laughs). York Howie: i think it’s also difficult because we all live with each other. We are kind of the only compatriots we have. Dive: How do you balance student life with writing music and performing? SL: We do it when we can. Writing and performing not school work. William Moose: I don’t think any of us are so self-diluded to think we are going to make it as something like this. It’s just a lot of fun. SL: I don’t know about that. YH: But we don’t want to sell ourselves short here. Dive: How did it feel to be on “Good Morning America?” /jM HALLOWEEN MADNESS! Come out early TH II RSDAy YjMK for KARAOKE & COSTUME CONTEST... GREAT PRIZES! | Continue the party on SATURDAy todays fi Ladies Night a MARTINI BAR College Night a UPTOWN SL: We played our first show back in August at the Cave. We didn’t know this at the time, but apparently we sold the place out. This time last year, us three were blowing up Franklin Street hand ing out CD’s to bars. That was more amazing to me than being on Good Morning America. Dive: Is the band’s naming a historical reference or does it have personal meaning? WM: That’s funny; someone from another band asked us if we were a Christian band. And no, we are not expressly a Christian band. SL: We had a couple names we were going through. I’m from Charleston and there are a lot of the Huguenots there. WM: Maybe we could have done a better job. We haven’t been billed as huge nuts yet. Dive: Maybe I can run the huge nuts ... WM: Yeah, you can include that in the interview too? Dive: What is the main inspi ration for the lyrics? SL: Mostly it’s nonsense. WM: I think to say it is com pletely without meaning would be unfair. We try and write cool melodies. Dive: Can I ask you specifi cally about the song “Julia?” SL: I tried to change the name because of the John Lennon song. It was so much better than this one. YH: I don’t want people to try Diversions aMviL . \WM | ' jffip-} ’ COURTESSY OF THE HUGUENOTS Chapel Hill band The Huguenots pose for the camera. The group brings its charming and catchy brand of '6os pop/rock to Local 506 tonight. and find out too much from the lyrics... Dive: The Independent Weekly referred to the band as “warm and fuzzy as your favorite sweater.” How would you describe your selves? SL: We all like sweaters, I don’t know if we are all warm and fuzzy. YH: Some of the songs are warm and fuzzy. WM: Something enjoyable and comfortable. We are pretty straight forward drum guitar bass trio. SL: It’s kind of cliche to say that however it comes out, it conies out. But that’s how it works. Dive: Is there anything else you all are excited about? SL: We should have anew LP out by Christmas. We have to do it in our own rehearsal space. We don’t have a lot of recording experi ence I just have a laptop. Contact the Diversions Editor at dive@unc.edu.
