The Vickers divorce case was tak en up Monday afternoon, when Mrs. Vickers No. 1 was put on the stand. Her evidence lasted all the after noon. Tuesday he testified and the speeches began. During this time one of tho jurors was taken ill, but ho recovered in a short while and tho case went on. Tho case was concluded Tuesday evening and giv en to the jury. They "wrestled" with it all night and did not agree until Wednesday morning eight of them being in favor of granting a divorce and four against. We are not in a position to criti cise either way, for a rush of busi ness kept us from attending the trial, and we suppose the twelve men who "sat on" the case are bet ter prepared to render a verdict than we. Of course public opinion is di vided some are in sympathy with him, while others are in sympathy with the first woman he married, and who came all the way from Georgia to testify in this case. While we have not talked to him in regard to the matter, it is gen erally understood that ho will re marry the last woman he married, or Mrs. Vickers No. 2, who went to her old home in Jonesville last week. The Presbyterian Synod. At the meeting of the Presbyter ian Synod in Winston last week a new Presbytery was established says the Statesville Landmark to be known as King's Mountain Pres bytery the territory being cut off from Mecklenburg Presbytery. The new Presbytery is composed of the counties of Gaston, Cleveland, Lin coln and Rutherford. The statistical report read to the Synod showed 179 ministers, 3S9 churches 3 licentiates, 64 candidates for tho ministry, 35,IS7 communi cants; funds raised $244,000; 10 churches organized; members added on examination 1,483, on certificate 1,178; foreign missionaries 7; vacant churches 40; average salary of pas tor- $G27; counties without churches 14. Mr. J. C. Steele, of Statesville, was elected a regent of the Barium Orphans' Home to fill out tho uncx- p'rod term ofS C. Rankin, deceased. Rev. C. G. Vardell, of Red Springs, was moderator of tho Synod. The next meeting will be held in Wil- inxton.; According to all accounts Mr. E. Spencer Blackburn didn't make a very favorable impression in his cam paign address in Statesvelle Friday night. Mr. Blackburn ordinarily has the "gift o'gab wery gallopin' ", but he seems not to havo been in good form Friday night. He covered a good deal of floor space by prancing around over tho platform, and talk ed a good deal about prosperity as represented by the high price of beans, etc., but altogether tho discourse was rather a ramblinjr one and of non effect. Some of his friends were disappointed with his effort, while others say he was attempting to make a "conservative speech" and fell down because he was not in his element. Hacett, perhaps one of the finest campaigner in North Carolina, delivered a powerful argu ment in defence of the Democratic party in this city Thu sday night. He put it plain and showed up to the Republican party in a manner that i ought to add ninny votes to the Dem ocratic party. Mt Airy New, 30th. The following which appeared in Tuesday's issue, should have been j credited to the Stanly Enterprise: ! Congressman Blackburn has made a boast of having secured $3,."i00 for the small postmasters in his district for ex'ra clercial hire. In another column of this paper will be found an article which exposes a fraud that! has been perpetrated on the govern-! ment and by which 54 of theso post master have be n drawing money lhy were not entitled to. One T. J. Bryan, a Republican, who lives in the adjoining county to Mr. Black burn, is the fellow who worked the game. We Lope that Mr. Blackburn is not a party to the crime. But if this method has been responsible for the extra money paid for clercial help in his district then where does Mr. Blackburn come in? How has he se cured such an appropriation? His explanation about that $3,500 will be especially interesting right how. s E. L.
