The Teachers Institute held here Saturday was very interesting. The address by Prof. Allen was particu larly good, a practical talk, full of inspiration for boys and girls, par ents and teachers. The recitations by Dervittt Martin, Misses Annie Thompson, Ethel Lowe and Gladys Martim, deserve mention for they were good and showed careful train ing. Prof Allen is certainly awakening a great interest in education in this county. May his efforts be so re warded that in a short time a nice school building with beautiful grounds may orniment every dis trict and each one be filled with all tho children of school age in each district, thursting and seeking after knowledge. Right You Are. The Winston Sentinel hits the nail square on the head when it says Those cities and towns in North Carolina are most prosperous whose citizens are most enthusiastic over the achievements and prospects of their respective communities. HART in HAS THE BEST Disc - Harrow The Wilkesboro-Jef ferson Turnpike. The following is a letter written by Mr. J. A. Holmes to the Statcs- vi lie Mascot: "The Slate is aiding with a gang of convits to build a turnpike road from Wilkesboro, N. C, up Reddies river and over the Blue Ridge moun tains to Jefferson, N. C, The road has been surveyed by S. T. Kelsey, who reports the length of the line o9 miles; maximum grade 1 foot rise in 30, no up grade going south from the top of the Blue Ridge 30 miles -to North Wilkesboro, and no up gradegoing north from the top of the Blue Ridgo mountains to New River. It is an expensive lino to build ow- ing to steep bluffs and rock cliffs along Reddies river and als3 to the necessity for a high line and the manking of high bridges, culverts and fills to avoid damage from floods and washouts. The intention is to put the road where it will stay and be in condition for travel at least 305 days 'n the year. Most of the way there is plen ty of rock-gravel and sand conven ient for the making of a firm road bed. The most expensive pait of the road is now being built at a cost of about $1,500 per mile and estimated cost oi tne entire line, &) mucs, is $40,000. We belcive that no wagon road has ever before been built in the mountain sections of the South with much light and regular grado for so long a distance 30 miles in the direction of heaviest hauling. Such a road will turely be worth to tho State, as an object lesson in road making, many times the amount that is being furnished in the way of con vict lobor to aid ;n its con struction. For Sale!
