COPPER MOVES WIDELY Stock Stronger arid Weaker by Turns, But Always Excited-Little Doing Elsewhere J" Xew Tork, Dec 19.- The opening in Amalgamated Copper was excited and cak. The first sale of 500 shares was r a decline of JA, and continued un- I vilng carried the stock below 65 with ' .wnsh. fluctuation. The rest of the: iniarket was neglected, owing to the! unsettling influence of Amalgama-ted 'Copper, but railroad ' stocks generally showed fractional advances. Bock I Island was up a point. The market vros unresponsive for a while to the depression in Amalgamated Copper and tardeued under large purchases o Union Pacific. The tractions were also promi TiPr.t. and minor specialties improved. lie: ropolitan Street Railway, Erie second j.r.'ferred, Distilling common and pre i ; rred, Tennessee Coal and Pressed Steel i ar preferred gained 1 to 2. New Yorjc, Chicago & St. Louis second preferred and Unihed States Exnress 3. s-eady dribbling of small amounts of A.na'gamated lowered it to 63, which n pe l oat yesterday's gain of 3 points. Th rise in the general market was .hacked and St. Paul and Metropolitan Street Railway reacted a point. A sud iei! upshoot in Amalgamated- to 66 b. wildered the traders, and the trading in orher stocks became small and with out feature. Dealings In the general list fell away to almost nothing, but prices were well b.eld ".at" . the level reached In the earlier reaction. The Pressed Steel ' Car stocks and People's Ga made additional gains. The latter reached lOlfe, Amalgamated vibrated be tween 65Vj and 66 frequently, and tvss heavily dealt m. Bonds-were steady. When a further cut in the price of mpper was announced St.. Paul. Missouri Pa'.'ifie and Manhattan ran off in a few transactions to about a point -under last night, but Amalgamated rose 1 above last night. The market hardened again, becoming almost stagnant. Manhattan ind Missouri Pacific recovered their looses, btft yielded again afterward. Other stocks moved very narrowly. Colo rado Southern first preferred and Wis consin Central preferred gained a point, while Iowa Central, United, States Rub ier and Rubber Goods lost 1 to 1. profit-taking lowered Amalgamated a pint, but the shorts bought anew and lifted it to 68. The market was practically at a stand prill when the hour for the assembling of Amalgamated Copper directors ar rived. Michigan Central sold at a de cline of 14 points. . Amalgamated Cop per touched 69 before 2:30 p. m., and Thtn commenced to. vibrate wildly on enormous transactions. Th. fires slump was t 64, and New York Central, Sr. Paul, Union Pacific and Manhattan fell to a point or more below yesterday. Ifubber Goods preferred lost 4. The ,-pbound in Amalgamated was to 67.
