THE MORNING POST, SATURDAY, 'AUGUST 5 IQ03 Are Trade Conditions Good According to Dun Business on a Sound Basis in Spite of 'Falling Stock Quotations Cotton Industry Prostrat ed by High Prices rw Tort Aurcst 7. Dun's -weekly review of trade tomorrow trill say: It has been an eventful week In the stock market, more failures occurring while orlces fell to the lowest point since January. 1901, yet there has been no corresponding demoralization in in or industry. From an average of 1116.27 list September the sixty ac tive railway shares have fallen about S31. and it Is not surprising that a few concerns have found It Impossible to meet their obligation. Considering the gTeat shrinkage In market valu of securities. It Is evident of solidity in the business 'world that suspensions are not more numerous, and most of these thus far reported were due to the pool operations in spe cialties rather than general weakness. Trade advices from nearly every sec tion continue to show as favorable conditions as- a year ago, and In many lines the volume of transactions has Increased. Jobbers, report fall busi ness opening with excellent prospects and" manufacturing plants are well oc cupied with the exception of cotton niti ritribution of merchandise is so heavy that railway equipment al ready proves Inadequate, although crops are not the factor that they will be In a few weeks. Railroad earnings for July exceeded last year's by 12.7 per cent., and those of 1901 by 20.2 per cent. On th whola crop news is less favor able, but no serious curtailment Is as sured and many sections make a very hrlrht reoort. Ae decline of 1.5 per cent, in th cost of commodities during July Is evidence that prices are less ln- Hated, since the change was mainly in meats and other food which have been ruling at an abnormal position. Foreign commerce for the last week at this port shows gains of 11,642,278 In Imports and J2.333.1S6 in exports .as compared with the same week last year. Bank exchanges at Nw York were' 9.1 per cent, smaller than last year and 6.1 per cent, less than in. 1901. but at other leading titles there were gains of 4.5 and 11.4 per cent re spect I velr. Consumption of Iron and steel Is on ailrrge scale, and In many departments "the past week has witnessed the sign ing of numerous contracts, but there Is a tendency to delay purchase beyond earlf needs. Xo change Is noticed In the attitude of cotton goods buyers, who appear de termined, to postpone business until the readjuitment of prices for raw ma tertal. Owing to the gradual reduction irc mill stocks (hero !s a similar dispo sition to delay undertaking new con tracts, and the result is. a further ad dition to Idle machinery. In view of the comparative steadiness of retail prices ami the activity in dry goods trading at many points, it Is evident that stocks lr. other than first hands were lancer than was believed when the speculative advance began. Although jobbers report bright. prospects for fall trade. It z remarkable that they mnkej lo little effort tz scur fw.rrd liveries. Pome reacts from the highest price of the season hs occurred In cotton, yet t one time d'irinc the past week the controlling interest offered fifteen cents for :.O09' bales without securing a bal. This testiHc to the complete control of available -stocks and also to the fjct that spectators on the rhnsl side appreciate- the Impossibility ot meeting contracts. Tort receipts and yports are Insignificant." Vl.eat has developed strength! department of charity work In North Carolina yearly meeting was forcibly dwelt upon by Joseph Potts of Mr. Airy. Rev. Ell Reece of High Point and J. Edgar Williams of Greensboro. An appropriation of funds' for carrying on the work next' year was made, and a subscription was maoc m me meet ing for the same purpose. . The afternoon session 'was still more largely attended and very intense In terest was aroused on tke subject of foreign missions by the reports from the foreign mission board, and by the reading of a letter from Miss Annie V. Edgerton, the missionary who is now serving her fifth year in India, and es pecially by a magnificent address by William Hotchklss, the head of the African Industrial mission. He is a missionary of the true spirit.. 1 His knowledge of the 'missionary field and his long experience as n, worker in the cause, and his forcible manner of speech are very captivating to all his hearers. The business to come before the meet ing tomorrow will be especially of in terest the report of the orphanage committee, the report of tho trustees and president of Guilford college. Tonight was held a meeting of the old students association of the college, when the principal address was made by Allen Jay of Earlham College, Ind. There are a number of native North Garolinians present who have come on a visit to the Old North State from Indiana and other states upon the occa sion of the yearly meeting. Mr. Chad- wick and brother of Indiana came here to spend some time. They left the state about 43 years ago. It Is scarcely an exaggeration to say that a majority of the- Friends In attendance from other yearly meetings are descendants of North Carolina stock. "Quite a talker, that Beasley."
