N. C, Members of the New York Cotton Exchange.. New York. Aug. 23. From the de velopment of the morning, it looks now as though there was no question about the attitude of the New Orleans pobl on September cotton In New York. Shortly before 11 o'clock Mr. Brown came Into the pit and bid September up to 11.48. This Is the first time he has taken the ring Into his confidence rt-pardlng this month, and his action this morning simplifies the situation considerably. He had a short conver sation with Mr. Stilly on the floor fhortly before he went into the pit and wlih two such Important Interests working in harmony there is little utility In attempting to oppose opera tions. The conation will continue unfll enough new cotton comes In from the new crop to be a weight on the market. It will not be a difficult matter to bring about a rash In the market after cotton begins to move for market ing will be from all parts of the cotton belt at the same time. But until this cotton, is available, the fact that Mr. I Brown owns the cotton in New York pives the manipulators every oppor tunity to" advance rrlces Just as far as they see fit. Spot cotton "is "quoted at 12. On .Monday. Au grist " will be oSf the board. There Is usually a dif ference of half a cent between the price of .spot cotton and the Immediate future. Eelther September must go up or the price of spot cotton come down. From today's developments it loks very much as though the price of September would be put up a cent or so. In a market of this kind a cent or two does not appear to be a matter of much Importance. With the advance In Sep tember, October Is likely to move up in sympathy and we may see another scare In December and January. While not disposed to the buying side of the market we certainly would not hazard the short side until there has been an other sharp advance. ! BARB EE & CO.
