This is a subject that our people ought to acquaint themselves with. We have the ma terial right here and it is practical to c; i and keep it. The chamber of commerce ought to make it a feature of special care. It is wonderful how many bananas D T Johnson, agent, is Belling. But when we take into consideration the high price of apples, and ihe unheard of low price he is selling bananas at, our wonder ceases. Think of buying A a bunch of bananas for 75c, $1 or even $1,251 And yet he is now receiving a lot of 25 bunches which he will sell at above prices. Also a lot of fine pea nuts.bought expresBlyfor seed. There is big money in raising peanuts at present prices. Sewer or Sewers A Case of Sup posed Dodging. In the contract with the city for the franchise of the water works, it was agreed that the city should be allowed to flush but the sewers or at least that's what the city thought the contract meant. But we understand the Water Company claims that the contract reads sewer and not sewers, and therefore was fonly meant to re fer to the sewer on Fayetteville street 1 It may be necessary, if this dodge is insisted upon, for the city to refuse any connection with its sewers except the one on Fayetteville street. But we hope the day is neart hand when the city own and con trol its own water works, gas works nnd eloAtfin liclifa 'Vith an Inner na we yield to these private .corpora- ' tions, we may look for dodges, j squeezes, jobbery, &c. ( Kaleigu Enterprise. The Visitor believes in Raleigh and in everything good that is at tempted in Raleigh, it feels an inter est and is glad to rejoice at the suc cess of any man or enterprise large or small. Learning that the Real Estate Agency of Messrs J M Broughton & Co, was nearing the close of their first year's business our reporter called upon them and asked a few questions Mr J M Broughton was found at his office hard at work answering letters from various sections.inquiring about real estate in this State. Our reporter was warmly greetedand his questions readily answered. Mr Broughton, began the reporter, we want to know what you think of Raleigh as a place to begin a business. You know that there has been some little talk lately about a furniture factory, and an iron furnace, etc. Well, said Mr B, I don't know much about an iron mill, although I have been through the largest one in the United States, but I do know that Raleigh has advantages over many places here iron and steel are now made with great profit, and as to furniture, I am sure there is no bet ter place for the manufacture of fur niture in the land. We possess what many manufacturing places do not, a most delightful climate, winter and summer. Factories rarely ever shut down here for a day even on account of the cold. And then there is anoth er thing that Raleigh posesses to a larger degree that she has been credi ted with. I refer to the disposition of our people generally to encourage and help along any enterprise or business that is worthy of it, and en couragement is worth very much to a beginner. When we started our Real Estate Agency one year ago, we could not have done much with large capi tal if we had possessed it, but we could not have done anything with out sympathy and encouragement. We wish to say that we have received that from the very start. Of course there were those who did not believe we could succeed and were careful to say so, but they were few in number and inferior in quality. Has your agency been appreciated by the people, generally ? Yes, we have had a steady growth of patron age from the start until now when one wishes to buy or rent, about the first thing he does is to make inquiry of us, and the chances are that he will go no further. H eretof ore when one wanted to lent he had to start out for a day's hunt as you would for a lost cow, and as soon as the people found we could serve them so prompt ly, the custom changed quickly.Prop erty owners too have found our Agency a great convenience to them as well as a saving of time and money and have gradually put their rent business in our hands until we have nearly 200 houses in hand. We shall do our best to get the remaining houses in our agency, for we could do better for all, both renter and owner if we had charge of all the houses in the city. Have you found sale for much city property the past year? You know the past year has been a bad one on real estate, still we have sold some property every month during the year, and in every case have given satisfaction to buyer and seller alike Have you made the selling of coun try property a part of your work? Yes, but it has been slow business the past year; it is getting somewhat better now however, we have several letters the past few days from parties who wish to buy land in this State, and one of them wants twenty thous and acres. We shall find this land for the party if possible, and we think it is. Do you regard a Real Estate Agen cy as a permanentbusiness in Ral eigh? ' Yes sir, the citizens of this good old town are a concervative people and change, their customs slowly, but when they see a change is beneficial they are sure to etick to it. There has been a growing necessity for an agency of this kind !n Raleigh for some years, though we did not rea lize it. We shall Legit) our second year of business today with assuran ces to the public that our business is a permanent institution iu the city and with a determination to do our very best work for our patrons iu the y ar before us.
