Garner, UIH School, It u oar pleasure to attend the closing exercises of Garner High Bchool on yesterday. We must ad mit that we never have been more agreeably surprised than on that grand occasion. The school under the management of that most excel lent and accomplished teacher, Prof Cate, has made such progress and success as to elevate him in the esti mation of all the patrons of this school. The exercises of the school consist ed of speeches, dialogu s and recita tions. All the scholars, from the smallest to the largest, acquitted themselves far above the average. The departments were also noted with much interest, &c. The contents of a little boys' pock et, by Seaton Barbee, was a success for so small a boy. Twenty dollars a lesson, by several characters, whose names we do not know, has certainly had. fine instruc tion to carry out a mock trial of court proceedings, &c. The most enjoyable thing we heard was How we hunted a mouse, by Jno Broughton. He handled the subject well indeed as he did the mouse also. Another line send off was Guess what's in my pocket, by Zoa John son, of Garner. There were six young men and boys that competed for the medal, namely: Master John Brougiv 'ton, James Buffaloe, ThosBrough ton, P A Johnson, Garner; E E Bag well.Pactolus; A S Cate, Rock Spring, The judges to decide consisted of J)r Herndon, W G Clements, J M Turn ' er and L O Lougee. It was decided that age being considered, the con test was with Thomas Broughton, James Buffaloe and P A Johnson, The committee being unable to de cide they drew for the prize and mas ter Thomas Broughton was the su& cessful winner. Well, last but not lea6t by far was the grand and masterly address that w as delivered by our fellow towns man. and editor, Josephus Daniels, Esq. All who heard the address were nlaQBon anri nvaanv lnariMi Atari We only wish we could give it in full for it is worth a vast deal to our citi zens, not only as. a stimulous to edu cation but as our duty as citizens to state and country.
