SHORT NOTES FROM ASBURY. The Crops Politics Alliance The Young Ladies and the Church. Correspondence Eykning Visitor The crops are good and the farm era are pleased with their prospects for a good crop. All are Banguiue un less some disaster. Only one white Republican and he not a natiye. This should be suffi cient evidence that the citizens of Asbury are men of the right material and can be relied on. The Alliance numbers about thirty of its best citizens and when a new measnre comes up it is not acted upon until due deliberation. Then they are a unit. All are strong Alliance men and will vote for Alliance princi ples. Asbury can boast of as pretty and accomplished young ladies as any neighborhood in the State, and on the 9th of August you will have an opportunity of seeing them, and to see them is sufficient evidence to prove the rest. The ladies of Ephesus church will give a festival on the evening of the 7th of August. To announce that the ladles of. Asbury assisted by the young "ladies will give a festival is evidence that it will be a success, as ladies never fail when they take hold of anything, and at a festival all know and' understand its manage ment. The writer is sorry to admit that he is not a church member, therefore cannot say but little about their church. Both churches have flourishing Sunday schools and each church has services once a month. Ephesus church, besides service once a month, has singing and prayer meetings weekly. The candidates for the different offices should make a note of this, as three townships will be well repre sented by some of its best citizens. A large crowd is anticipated and all a -a respectfully invited. Tours, &c, Quilla. A Soldier's Home. Western Guide. For the last few years, an attempt has been made all over the State to establish,' VJSoldier's- pome,", for the alofpja'ebldier?. Just exactly what thik Home' will be, "has never been de elded upon, or where it will be, but wxk has been going on in the direc tion and tope ia entertained that it will soon be established. North Car-olixft- needs this home and should have ; it. j.In our State there are thousands of old soldiers, poor, needy and' unafcle to wdrk f or their living. They are suffering, and it is not right, that the younger generation of our land should neglect this matter, The trne heroes'bf our country should not be Reflected or reduced to want, simply because they fought and bled for the dear Sunny South. But to day.awayfrom the maddening crowd, far from town and city, there dwells many a poor man, who is actually suffering for bread and meat. And there in a little but of some sort, scarte? sufncient to keep off the rain cr protect from the cold winter winds, he liTea, a poof wounded Confederate soldier. And should not these men be cared for, and protected? Our vaute made their 'condition. 'We lost, andiiow they are suffering. Let this good work go on and may this Hbme soon be established, where the poor, the halt and the blind may co and be at rest. , Peterrnjned to Tell the Truth. Pittsburg Dispatch. The robust and healthful indepen denoe which should always be sug gested by the name "American" has not bf en wholly monopolized by the girls much of it as they now possess. A man of very genuine and inspiring independence was a witness in a wee- ternPennsylvania court not long ago, A lawyer who had the cross examln ingof the witness tells the story, Everything went well until a certain question had been asked and as much of it answered as fulfilled the lawyer's desires. "Stop there. Don't tell any more about that. "But there is more to tell. I have not fully answered the question.' The muzzle was held firmly in place but the witness was not subdued Even when the court had rebuked him he was still respectfully insubor dinate. . "I have been brought here by au thority," he argued. "I have been required to take a solemn oath to tell the truth, the whole truth and noth ing but the truth. Now you must al low me to keep the oath you made me swear. Neither court nor counsel has a right to force me into perjury because the counsel don't want just quite the whole truth. I insist ou my right to give the remainder of my an swer." "And, if you'll believe me." said the disgusted lawyer, "that hayseed court sustained him and I lost my uase. Simplicity of Children. What grown people keep concealed children often let out in their sim plicity. A striking illustration of this appeared some time ago in a Sunday school, A teacher had been telling the class the story of the rich man and Lazarus, when he asked the question: "Now, children, which would you rather be, the rich man or Lazarus?" A little boy spoke out aad said: "I would rather be the rich man while I live, and Lazarus when I die." If we are not mistaken that is about the sentiment of a large num- i er of peopK They want to roll in the luxury of the rich man while liv ing on earth and then be carried on angels' wings to heaven. But the Master says. "Ye cannot serve God and mammon." That's one of the moral impossibilities. A Man Under Her Bed. Annie Gray, of Lowell, Mass. woke up and found a man in her room Wednesday night and jumped from the window, twenty-five feet from the ground. She broke a leg and suf fered a concussion of the spine. She was taken to St. John's Hospital, and is in a critical condition. She knows who the intruder was, but will not tell his name. He attempted no in dignities; but becoming conscious that some one was in the room she put out her hand and felt his less as he was crawling under the bed. Then she sprang from the bed and through the open window. It is Btated that the man escaped from the premises in the same manner that. Via haA train. ed access to the room from a neigh boring shed. They Say. Concord Standard. That the boy at the seashore dances to the tune of $4 a day, besides what he spends for ice cream with the .sum mer girl. The candidates this time are going to do the square thing, and not do just anything "because they have to, you know, owing to circumstances." A man who can endure the tor- ments of the mosquitos for a whole night and not use a few Sunday school words, need not fear that in a moment of temptation he may let his tongue "slip." 4 ' HOUSEKEEPERS can prove by a single trial that these Extracts are the cheapest; jftey are true to their names, full 'measure! tnd hjghly concentrated, ' ,.' , THE CHEAPEST AFTERNOON PAPFR IN NORTH S-u.Tdso3?i1joh.
