C, APRIL 30, 1891. A DISASTROUS SPECULA TION. When tbe farmers throughout the country were advised to hold their cotton and store it up in order to force tbe price higher, tliey little suspected that they were engaging in such a costly speculation. The advice given tbe farmers last fall to store up their cot ton and hold it for higher prices has not cost the farmers themselves less than $20,000,000 in the decline in price alone not to mention the shrinkage and waste, and stealage and insur ance and loss by fire and all that. Farmers would do well to leave the profits of speculation to be reaped by speculators, and then they will have but little use for warehouses or open lots in which to store their cotton, which sometimes burns as in the case near the city yesterday. These friends have the real sympathy of the people, but that doeent remove the loss. 19 SBE MAD ? Is Anna Dickinson the great female orator, insane or mad ? That seems to be the question that is agitating all New York at this time. In a speech in that city, she used such vigorous language in speaking of Mr. Harrison and of the Republican party and evinced such anger as to suggest a doubt in regard to her sanity Miss Dickinson appeared before an audi ence at the Broad street theatre on Sunday night and delivered herself in a two hours speech against the ad ministration, the Republican party and the New York Tribune in par ticular. At the close the question of her sanity became the general topic, not because of and failure or deficiency in her speech, for she was enthusiastically applauded and de clared tbe very queen of Oratory. She was announced to epeak next Sunday evening in Brooklyn. We are glad the south has no female poli ticians to desecrate Sabbath evenings witb political harangues. Blazing With Jewels. Brooklyn Eagle. Rev. Dr. George F. Pentecost, now in India, writes: "After being hon ored with a Beat at the private dining table of the viceroy everything else in a social way comes to a man or woman. So I have dined with tbe Lieutenant Governor and been to various receptions and evening par ties at both the beautiful Belvidere and the government he use, and the last two receptions (evening parties), one each at the viceroy's and the Lieutenant Governor's, to meet his imperial highness, the Czarowitz.' Of course I went to see the future czar of all the Russias a fairly good looking young fellow of about 21, with a look about his eyes and a jaw which sug gested that he might be equal to any emergency whieh might arise in the future. I stood by his side for ten minutes in a crush of 2,000 people, and so had a good look at him. I am glad that I am not a Czarowitz, and that he is not my imperial highness. "But what interested me more than this young imperial highness was the great assemblage of native princes, rajahs, maharajahe, etc., with their magnificent and gorgeous attire. I don't think I ever saw so many jewels The old and young Mfieigh RoSt Off ICe in my life, princes had selves out for the occasion. One young maharajah had a necklace of dia monds on completely surrounding bis neck, six strands deep, on one of them smaller tbau a large pea and running up in size to a large hazelnut. Besides euch masses of diamonds there were pearls in strings (more beautiful than diamonds), rubies, sapphires, emeralds, opals (most beautiful), and every glorious stone tbe earth yields. It would have sent haif the society women of New York and Brooklyn mad with envy just to have seen them. And to think of them bein wasted on the men." Late News Notes. Mr. Samuel Storey, Gladstonian member of parliament forSunderlanc has been committed for trial on a charge of perjury for falsely charging the police with assault during the Silkworth strike. The Paris Siecle sas that it will probably be found necessary before August to ask parliament for a sus pension of duties on cereals, and that Germany is expected to seek similar action from'the reichstag. There was great excitement in the Minnesota house, ou the afternoon of the I7th, over the discovery that the Australian ballot bill had been stolen. The bill had been passed by the sen ate and house, and sent to the engross ing committee. When the polls in tbe New Hainp shire Methodist Episcopal conference, at Newport, closed on the 20th, it was found that nfty seven had voted in favor of admitting women as lay dele gates to lay electoral and general con ferences, and twenty seven against Thirty four opposed the amendment of the second restrictive rule, while 53 favored it.
