KALEIGU,N.C.,OCT. 17,181)1 t'BOAKINu. There are some people in whose make up the croaking spirit overtops every other characteristic, to such an extent that if they can tiud nothing else to grumble at, they will grumble at their own home affairs. Of course they wish their homes to be thought well of by the outside world and all that, but they see somethings that might have been be' ter, they are dis pleased with this, that or the other and their disposition to growl is so strong that they just cannot refrain and they let fly, though they are damaging themselves and all the family. These sort of people live in Raleigh and some of them know so little about other places that they are just inca pable of comparing their home with other homes and as they see only the foibles and failures, it may be, at their own home city only, they yield to their growling spirit, though they thereby become a posi tive drawback to said city and the people who live in it. Suppose the evils they complain of do exist, what do they gain for themselves or their homes by growliDg about it be lore the whole world t Nothing but the present gratification; but by in dulging this spirit they are tearing down what others are trying to build Tip, they are driving away the pros perifcy, others are trying to attract, they are pursuing a course which if pursued by the entire population of any city persistently will depopulate it and have its deserted streets and empty business houses as monuments to what croaking can do. Stop croak ing gentlemen; but you Bay, these things of which we complain are real grievances,;they are outrageous Well suppose they are, is jit not in many instances too late to remedy tbem and in all such instances are you not increasing the injury of which u are complaining, are you not adding fuel to the fire? Are you not helping these very people to do most effec tually the thing you complain of Have some common sense about you and stop trying to keep down your own home. The Census Bureau has made pub lie a bulletin on the subject of bitu minoas coal production in PeunByl vania. A report from Cevlon sta' es that thi pearl fishery last season was the seoond largest ou record during the present century. The amount re alized by the government was more than 900,000 rupees, equal to $ '80,800. It is said that at Queretaro, near M;xioo, caes of soap are used as currency, and are legal tender for the payment of deb's. It is difficult to estimate, confesses the New York Nous, the amount of money that lias been left iu Europe this year by American tourists. Taking all the expenses into con sideration, however, the passages out and home and the average 6um dis bursed on the other side, the aggre gate cannot be far from $73,000. OOC. All of this has to be paid out of the products of labor in this country, and if it is not returned in the shape of the gold paid for our wheat, petrole um and other articles, it will repre sent the cost paid by this country for the pleaeure of its citizens abroad. If a man is constantly learning and never using his knowledge nor com municating it, of what value i" it ? It does not enrich his own life or that of others, and he cau not even leave it behind bim when lie dies, as the miser dons his wold. The affec tions that are never expressed wither up; the power? that are not exercised decline. The . very qualities which are admirable in themselves exist on ly by being constantly employed for the bent fit or pleasure of others. So no uia" can live unto himself. What ever he would get nod keep, that he must give and use most freely. Two new Atlantic liners, to be 600 feet long and faster than anything afloat are guarantee-1 by the builders to te ready for sea early iu the spring of 1893 They will be almost as long as the Great Eastern, th ugh not nearly so wide They will have quite as Nmuch engine power as that un fortunate steamship had, but it will be so compact and eeonotftizwd that It will not occupy pne-t' ird as much space nor e one quarter the weight of the old paddle and screw engines. To do well is to be well Persevere in the thou ht " I shall be better to morrow," and it will help you to be so It hr-s been said that i o man e er died without his own consent Never get your own consenr to dying Resolve to live; resolve t be well You yourself must m ke the effort; you uiiwi work out your own sal va- tion.
