Till 8 p ni Sunday, com iued clou dy weather with northeast winda growing colder Saturday night. No rain. CITY IN BRIEF. New moon this morning. Politica will aoon be ell the rage. There were only comparatively a few country people in the city to day. The Democratic State Executive Committee will meet here next week. The. bigamiBt "Wylde" has been se ntenced at Greensboro, to five years in the penitentiary. The penitentiary was reinforced yesterday by two convicts from John aton county. The railroad con missioners made an examination of the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad and found it in good order. A full rehearsal of the characters in the tableaux of "Ben Bur'' will be held to night at the rectory of the church cf the Good Shepherd. Copies of the Monthly Bulletin are beiog sent out from the Agricultural Department to the number cf ten thousand. It ia seriously in contemplation to break up 'he crowds of idlers who lounge around the Mayor's office du riog trials. Sleeping i dry goods .boxes out houses etc , getting to be commoD among f"Min of the small colored boys This should te broken up. There was a It-rge attendance at the Agricultural and Mechapical College last night to hear an address from Maj. S. M. Finger, Superintendent of Public lustrucri n It was an occa eion of much interest.. Mrs. E. K Bradford, thu aithor of theBenHur tableaux is in the city and is at the K oiory as the guet of the Parish of the Church of the Good Shepherd. There will be a rehearsal of the tabi leaux this evening at the Rectory at 7 o'clock, sharp, and all who are to represent characters are urgently re quested to be on hand promptly at that hour. The Rev. Dr. Watkins will tomor raw occupy his pulpit in the First Presbyterian church of this city, for the last time as its pastor. He wi.d not preach a farewell Bermon, in th genera' acceptation of that term, but a simple gospel sermon Col. A. K. MoClure, of the Philadel phia "Times" has atarted for another tour through the South All who re member Col. McClure's visit to Ral eigh last year, can realize his true de votion to the Southern people. Bope he will have a pleasant trip. Are v a to allow the centennial year of Raleigh's existence to pass with out some appropriate celebration. Such an event in most cities would be occasion of grand celebration. Let us be up and doing. Our Board of Aldermen Bhould take the initiative. The people generally are favorable to the proposition. The road question ia still looming up all over the State. Why cannot the matter be a well discussed one on the stump this year f lr is a 'subject, that enters closely into all neighbor hoods. Good roads are a blessing, and it is the duty of the State to fur nish its citizens with all the blessings at its command. Let the legislature take It in hand, and sen to it that a large force of convicts is kept con stantly at work on the roads of the several counties. The Lenten season ia near at hand. A gentleman who haa traveled most extensively and made a tour of Eu i rope says Fayetteville street 1b one ! of the prettiest he ever saw. Although the weather continues cool we shou'd not complain It should be remembered that the long er the budding of the treea is post poned the better will the ;prospect be for a good fruit year. The present weighing of the uail8 on the railroads show, that the weight of mail matter has largely In creased since the last weighing three years ago. For the purpose of weigh ing the mail matter in the country, geo. raphical divisions are made by the department; Georgia, the Caro Unas, Florida, Alabama and Tennes see forming this division. Mayor's Court. The case against Mack Freeman, colored, for being drunk and disor derly and resisting an officer. The evidence showed Freeman to be a desperate character. He was fined $50 and cost. A case of drunk and down was Hoed $1 and cost. Personal mention. Mr. John W. Baker left this morn ing for a shoTt visit to friends in Va Miss Ettie Mangum, of Chapel Hill, is in the city visiting friends. We are pleased to learn that Capt. S. A Ashe, who has been sick with the grippe, is improving. Mr. W. D. Hay has gone to New Orleans to see the Mardi Gras. Grand SireBusbee has receivtd an invitation to attend the dedication of the New Odd Fellows Temple at Baltimore, April 26th. "The FalelRh." We hear that our people will pro bably be called upon to subscribe a sufficient sum for a present to the I cruiser "Raleigh" on the occasion of i its launch at Norfolk next month j We hope that the response in this case will be liberal so that we may show our appreciation of the compli ment bestowed, not only upon our city, but upon the State of North Carolina. $1 50 and $2 OO. Yesterday afternoon the Board of Directors met to hear a report from the committee on buildings. The chairman reported that the three story brick building at the corner of Fayetteville and Morgan streets, near the capitol had been rented for the association. This announcement gave great satisfaction, as this is the most desirable place in Raleigh. The board also took steps for the formation of aladies auxiliary society to consist of three ladies from each church, whose names will be an nounced shortly. Up to this time no collections have been made, although they ruu from January 1st, 1892. The reason for the delay is in the fact that no suitable building could be secured until now. The pledges may be paid to the treas urer, Mr. C. P. Wharton. During the next week Mr. Geo. F Ball will wpit on the subscribers.
