L'RIKST OfTT ClRCniATTON RALEIGH, MAY ii, 1892 THE OUTLOOK IN EU! OPE. Telegrams received from the conti mnt-indicace that in Germany and Austria-Hungary, as in England, the May Day celebration will partake of the character of a popular fete, and the duty of the police will be of passive nature. On the other hand, in France, Italy, Spain and Belgium the authorities are making preparations as if to sup press a revolution. At a cabinet meeting in Paris today convened especially to discuss the sit nation, it was decided that it would be highly dangerous to relax the re pressive measures already taken in the slightest degree. The Minister of Justice has instruct ed public prosecutors and examining magistrate to remain in their offices throughout the day tomorrow. Prefet of Police Loze tody called together the police commissaires to receive final orders as to how to deal with demonstrations in the outlying districts of Paris. No disorderly bands of people will be allowed to as seinble, or to penetrate to the city, DEATH OP MRS. VIRGINIUS BALLARD. Wilmington MessengeFT The Messenger sjmpatbiz8' witl Mr. Virginias Ballard, an old Wil mingtonian, but for years past a resi dent of Durham, in the death of hi wife, which occurred Wednesday night. The deceased was highly spoken of by the Globe, which states that Mrs. Ballard had been conspicu ous in social circle and in all under takings havinS for their object the good of the town, the church, or any worthy organization. She was an active worker and an acknowledged leader She was a member of the Methodist church, and died sustained by a Christian hope. Tn church work a? in other things, she was always in the lead, and will be much missed. The Bath county, Ky , grand jury indicted one W. T. Johnson, of IUi nois, for sending through the mail a blackmailing letter to a citizen of that county. Under the law of Ken tucky this is a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the penitentiary Governor Brown, of Kentucky, issued a requisition upon Governor Fifer for the man, but Illinois' Governor re fnsed to honor it. Rumor says that Johnson is an influential member of the G. A. R. and Fifer is a candidate for renomination. FOUtfD AFTER TEN YEARS. The little 3 year old daughter of George. Smith, of Rosedale, N. T , disappeared ten years ago. Soon after the child was kidnapped his wife eloped, and Smith had not seen or heard from eit her since then until tfais week, when his stepdaugh ter, who was in Kingston, N. Y , on a brief visic, learned that a thirteen year old girl living with David Kidd's family was left with them about ten yean ago by a woman who gave her nmT as Contant and said she was the little one's mother but' unable to support it. Smith came here and ' found the girl was bis daughter, but the Kidd family refused to give her up. He yjll ask tor a writ of habeas corpus. FIRI$ AT. LITTLE ROCK. Little Rock, Ark , April 20. The first cotton fire of the year at this place occurred at 9 o'clock tonight, entailing a loss estimated at $35,0C3. A blaze was discovered in the south east corner of Dudley E. Jones & Co's large cotton sl ed at Second and Com oierce streets, in which 600 bales of cotton bwnfd by Richard Fletcher were destroyed. 1 he Are spread like lightning and ty the time the fire department arrived on the scene the whole shed was ablaze and property for a b'ock around was threatened with destruction. Adjoining the Joue shed was M. G Hall & Co.'s big shed with 100 bales of cotton. This was soon on flr. By hard work 50 bales were saved. The buildings of the Dickinson Hardware Company, Dickinson Arms Company an Dudley fi. Joues Ma chinery ""oinpany now took fire, but by the heroic efforts of the firemen the fire was gotten under control and the buildings saved after slight dam age had been done. The losses are about as follows: Richard Fletcher's loss on cotton $21, 000, felly covered by insurance ; M. G. Hall & Co , loss on cotton $',750 ; fully insured. On building, $5,003 ; no insurance. Dudley E. Jones on building $5,000; no insurance. The origin of the fire is a mystery. That Tired Feeling Is a dangerous condition due directly to de pleted or impure blood. It should not be allowed to continue, as in its debility the system is especially liable to serious attacks of illness. It is remarkable how beneficial Hood's Sarsaparilla is in this enervating state. t Possessing just those ele HOOCl S ments which the system SarS3D3" needs and readily seizes, ... this medicine purifies the r 1 1 1 a blood, and imparts a feeling of serene strength which is comforting and satisfying. Hood's Sarsaparilla is the best remedy for that weakness which prevails at change of season, climate or life. "I have been convinced MaVaa that Hood's SarsaDarilla is one of the greatest medi- th Weak cines in the world. I say Strong this for the benefit of all other tired out, run down, hard-working women. Hood's Sarsaparilla is not only e cellent as a blood purifier, but for all other female complaints, even if of long standing, Mrs. M. A. Scablett, Northville P. O., Mich. Yokkna, Miss , April 80 A foul murder was committed ou the ILunt plantation near here at about nine o'clock yesterday morning, the vie tiin being a well known colored man named Wm. Washington, whe owns a small farm near there. He had just smarted on his way home from Mr J W Kline's place where lie had leased land for this year. When a short distance from the Hunt quar'ers, he was fired upon by an unknown party in ambush and was shot iu the bask wich large shot, some of the shot going through his body. His horses turned and ran a short distance when he fell to the ground dead. Parties hearing' him cry out and seeing the horses running to the house, went the road and found him there dead. Justice W. H. Mapl i beir? notified, immedi ately went to the place, impaneled a jury and held an , inquest, but was unable to And out anything that would lead to the capture of the mar derer Andrew Washington, colored, as a feud with deceased is suspected and his arrest is anticipated. THE RIDER CAE. Durham Sun. We learn that in the case of Rey. Mr. Rider, his official Board of Carr church, agreed unanimously to sus tain their pastor until the official au thority of the church shall decide the matter. There is much favorable talk amongst our people as to the innocence of this unfortunate, but believed to be innocent, minister. This speaks well for our people.not to condemn a gentleman of unapproach able character until he is proven guilty. The properly constituted law officer of the church is bound to have an investigation, which we learn, he will eoon institute. ! JJniiMalTuisiiiia Clare On draught. fl.lC per gallon. Baltisi rk, April 30 The propo sition of the Thompson Houston Electric company to run trains thro' the Belt, Railrosd company's tunnel was accepted today, and the compa ny, it is stated, will be ready to move the trains by the time the tunnel is opened, which will be in December next. Eighty ton electric motors will be used. If the experiment here is a success it is predicted that steam as a motive power will be sent to tbe bench. Electricians and practietl railroad men are becoming convinced that within a very few years it will be practicable to run trains between Baltimore and New York with the electric motor at a great saving in time. A business effort is now to be.irade to complete the work of raising mon ey for the monument to the signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence There is already a good amount to start on. The work is to be resumed at once and it will not be abandoned until the monu ment is unvelied. The monument to the Confederate dead of Cabarrus has been erected on the court house lawn, in Concord and is ready for th6 unvailing on May 5th.
