Death of Judge J. J Davis. His Excellency Gov. Holt this morn ing received the following dispatch: LnrtSBCRG,N.O..Aug.8,8:10a m. Got. T. M. Holt, Raleigh, C. Judge Davis died last night at 10:05 o'clock. The funeral will take place here tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10.30. , 0. M. CoosK. Gov. Holt at once sent the following telegram: EXKCOTIVB DKPARTMENT, Raleigh, Aug 8,1893 Mrs J. J. Davis, Louisburg, N. C. The State has sustamea m iu death of that eminent jurist, pure and upright Christian gentleman, Judge Davis, an Irreparable loss and, while mourning with me over this sad af niction, tender to you and your fauv ily loving sympathy in this your hour of bereavement. Thomas M. Holt, Goernor. Although the precarious health of i l a 1 . Judge Davis for Borne time past has prepared bis relations, friends aDd the public generally for the sad ter mination, yet the announcement will be received throughout North faro. Una with the utmost sorrow. Ther was no public man In our 8tate who stood more deservedly high with the people of all classes. In all public relations as Congressman or Jurist he won the proud title of a pure and pa triotic man, while as a Christian gen tiemen he endeared himself to the social circle. As soon as the news was received the flags on the ca pitol were placed at half maet, and other dt rnonstrations of respect will follow. CauTbi Be True.? The Shelby Rev'ew says: There is an old man in No. 5 township who some time ago deeded his property to his son upon the agreement that t e son should care for him what little time he had to live. After gettiut? possession cf the property hednvc the old man away Borne days ago the feeble old man went back to beg for bread. It was refused him and he f.ni-nAri hank. Feeble from want of food, bowed down with sorrow nd humiliation, he fell exhausted by the wayside, where he was found bv neighbors who took him to a hous near by and ministered to his needs When driven from home by his in human son the old man was given an asylum by a daughter, who had been deserted by a worthless husband who left her destitute. A Lamp Story . We tell the story as it was told to us. A very reliable gentleman named Mr. Jones, who lives nea" the Ralflitfb S Gaston Depot, on yesterday after noon during the storm, noticed that his lamp was burning. He ex'in guished it, but in a moment there came a vivid fHsh of lightning and the lamp was again lighted He con eluded that the better part of wisdom was to remove it to the yard, which he did in quick order. Perhaps th visitation of Mars had something to do with it. At any rate, it beats Aladdin acd his wonderful lamp " Last week 8,599 pounds of news papers and periodicals were handled at the Charlotte post office.
