D. has declined the call to a professorship in the Union Theological Seminary and will remain in Wilmington as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of - that city. We have been requested by Col. W. R. Richardson, chairman of the com mittee on music and decoration for the reoeptlon of distinguished visi tors to this city on September 16tb next, to notify the members of said committee to meet at the Mayor's of- n!e ou tomorrow evening at 8 80 o'clock for the purpose of consultas tion, &c. The Greensboro Workman says : Owing to the severe drought quite much damage has been done to the growth of cabbage, beans and other vegetables, as well as to the clover and grasses which are essential to the production of milk and batter. The dust was laid by the rain w had last night, and the indications are favor able for farther raias in a short time. Fire Works. We learn that the arrangement for the elaborate programme of fire works for the Centennial Celebration was made by our fellow citizen Mr. A. B. Btronach during a recent busi ness trip to the North. It will sur prise many that the cost will not ex ctied ',0J, which, considering the many and beautiful pieces, is exceed ingly moderate. Died At the resideocaof her husband on East I'avie street at 9 o'clock August 25th. Mrs Nancy King, wife of Josiah Klug, aged 71 yjar. She was a most estimable lady and greatly beloved by all who know her. Her death, though not wholly unexpected, will be a sad blow to her hosts of friends. The funeral will take place tomor row morning at 10 o'clock at the Tab- nacle Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Dr. Hal1. Friends and acquaint ances invited to attend. Epworih League. Ep worth Leaguers will please bear in mind that the regular monthly meeting ot League No 24 will be held tomorrow (Prida) night in the Sun day school room, at Edentoo Stieet Methodist Church. The committees are requested to have their reports in readiness and every member is urged to be present. Members of Marvin Chapter and, of the Junior League are cor dially invited to attend Time 8 o'clock. Murder Will Out. The Greensboro Workman says : The uncle and father of Frank G. (Jrog&n, who is Buspected of the mar der of Wesley James, a wealthy bachelor farcer of Welnut Cove, near here, have been arrested and lodged in jail on suspicion of com plicity.in the crime. James, wbo liv ed as a recluse, never associating or having any dealings with his neigh bors, died very suddenly about a month ago. Grogan, wbo was a perfect stran ger and claimed to be from Virginia, made his appearance aboat the time with a will by wbich James' property was bequeathed to hi n. The will is now discovered to be a forgery. Gro gan also held deeds to James' land. Grogan has fie J. The stomach of the dead man has been placed in the hands of the State chemist for analy sis. Embezzlement Case. Yesterday a former street car con ductor named W. C. Cooper, was ar rested on affidavit of S. W. Huff, Esq , manager of the Raleigh Street Car Company, . alleging that the jaid Cooper had embezzled funds of said company to the amount, of - $5, more or less. The trial was first set before M. B. Barbee, J. P., but removed on affidavit to Justice Marcom. It com menced this morning in the court house at 9:30 o'clock. Col. J. W. Hinsdale appeared for the railroad and Col. T. M. Argo for the defend ant. ;; Mr. Cooper was in service of the company about three weeks, running on the Blount street line. There was a considerable crowd present and the case excited much interest. A large number of witnesses were ex amined on both sides. Several wit nesses testjified to seeing defendant collect fares and not ring them up. ; The defendant ; was recognized to appear at the next term of the Supe rior Court for the trial of criminal 1 O O. Meares will on Aug 29th open a first class school of music, where instructions can be obtained on all the various in struments at very moderate fees Quite a number have already enter ed the school, and as it increases Prof. Meares will associate with him self experienced teachers. We predict for this school much success, as Prof. Meares, the director, is a teacher and composer of known ability.
