SHOTWELL) New York, Feb. 9. Gould shares were- the strong .feature of the stock market in the early ..trading today. Buying of Denver continued, resulting in a gain in the common of over a point and of 2 points in the preferred. Tex as and Pacific was also strong, of a point being gained, while Missouri Pa cific rose of a point.- Steel shares were '-strong with' fractional advances. In spite -of the weak condition of the copper metal market the copper shares ihowed strength in the early part of the session. Amalgamated and Smelt ers each rose a point. Reading, Union Paeitlc and Southern Pacific, while strong, showed only fractional gain.1!. New York Central was active and advanced only half n point. The plan to make Wabash the principal Gould company and use it for rejuve nation of the system has given the Missouri Pacific such a strong stand ing that it is possible some bonds may be tsued directly by Missouri Pacific for raising money In addition to what will be produced by the sale of securi ties from its treasury to the treasury of the Wabash company. Wall street had a Weird rumor this morning that the Gould and Harrlman lines would be merged, but nothing of the kind has ever been considered by Mr. Harrlman or Mr. Gould. The comptroller of the currency is sued a call for the condition of the national banks as of February 5. In London American securities were irregular. Silver stocks were the leaders on the. curb market. Cobalt Central advanced on the strength of a new discovery of pre having been struck at the lowest level at which it has been encountered In the camp. In the gold li$t, Goldfleld Consolidated was most active. Among the copper stocks, Ohio was the leader. WANTED. WANTEDBy couple, room and board in a private family. New York, Feb. 9. The market is quiet today but held firm. Traders en deuvored to force a reaction on the disappointing Liverpool markets, where spot sales were 4,000 bales at yesterday's prices and futures were dull and heavy and a little off. These advices .'were, however, offset by the continued absence of needefl rains in Texas for neww crop preparations. Prices slumped, two to four points In early trading1 under the lead of March, May and July but recovered this be fore the end of the first hour and held steady at about lust night's prices dur ing most of the afternoon. The situation and outlook, while, not paitlcularly encouraging for bullish activity at the moment, continues nev ertheless favorable for such develop ments within the next thirty days. liy that time the mercantile world will be able, to plan business for the next six months or a year on the schedules pro posed In the new tariff bill and the Inauguration of the new governmental administration at Washington will un doubtedly Inspire greater confidence In the progress of general business. Ihese developments wll undoubtedly greatly Increase consumption and thereby stimulate a broadening demand for the balance of the crop. We would, therefore, continue to ad vise adhering to a pcalplners' position on the bull side of the market and fa vor purcha-ses of May, Jul and Octo ber for moderate turns on all further weak spots or declines from present level. The State Chemist Finds Typhoid in Thirly-Five Out of Forty. Seven. A bill was reported favorably this morning in the senate which pro vides for an analysis of all mineral waters offered for sale or for resorts in the state, and if found bad the analysis will be published in the Health Bulletin. It provides also that the owner of a spring may have the water analyzed three times and if found pure it will be so stated in the Health Bulletin. But here is the most interesting matters of the whole thing under dis cussion: Dr. Lewis finds that of the 47 mineral waters being sold in this state, 34 are polluted with typhoid germs, and actually dangerous. Few will read this, comparatively speaking, but it is of vital importance..' It goes without saying that the Scott bill will pass both houses.
