Platform Adopted by the Confederated In dustrial Organizations at St. Louis, Mo., Feb. 22-24, l892- PREAMBLE. This, the first great labor conference of the United States aodof the world, representing all divisions of urban and rural organized industry, assembled in national congress, invoking upon Hs action the blessings and protection of Al mighty God,, puts fort) to and for the producers Sf the nation this declaration of union and in ependence. The conditions which surround ns best justify our co operation. We meet in the midst of a nation brought to the verge of moral, political, and material ruin. Corruption dominates the ballot-box. the legislature, the Congress, and touches even the ermine of the bench. The people are demoralized. Many of tie States have been compelled to isolate the voters at tl e polling places in order to prevent universal intimidation or bribery. The news papers are subsidized ormnzzled, public opinion silenced business prostrated, our homes covered with mortgages, labor impoverished, and the land concentrating in the hands of capitalists. Th urban workmen are denied the rteLt of rgamzation for seif-protection; imported pau perized labor beats down their wages; a hire ling standing army, unrecognized by our laws, is et-tablished to shoot them down ; and they are rapidly degenerating to European conditions. The fruits of the toil of millions are boldly stolen to buili up colossal fortunes, unprece dented in the history of the world, while their E assessors despise the republic and endanger berty. From the sume prolific womb of gov ernmental iniusti breed the two great classes paupers and millionaires. The national power to create money is appropriated to enrich bond lolders ; silver, which has been accepted as coin since the dawn of history, has been demonetized to add to the pure! asipg power of gold hi de creasing the value of all forms of property, as well as human laior.-nnd the supply of currency is purpoely abridged to fatten usurers, bank rupt enterprise, and enslave industry. A vst conspiracy against mankind has been organized n two continents, and is taking possession of tie world. If nt met and overthrown at once, it forbodes terril.lo social convulsions the de struction of civilization, or the establishment of an absolute despot ism. In this cris-is of human affairs the intelligent working people and producers of the United States 1 ave come together in the nacneof peace, rder, and society to defend liberty, prosperity and justice. , We declare our union and independence. We assert our purpose to support the political or ganization wl icl represents our principles. We charge that ti e contro in: influence dom inating the old political parties have allowe the existing dreadful conditions. to develop without enous effort to restrain or prevent them. Tl ey have agreed together to ignore, in the coming , campaign, every issue but one. They propose to drown the outcries of a plundered people with the Uproar of a sham battle over the tariff; so that corporations, national banks, rings, trusts, "watered stock," the demonetization of silver, and the oppression of usurers, may all be lost sight of. lhe propose to sacrifice our homes and children upon the altar of mammon ; to de stroy the hopes o the multitude in order to secure corruption funds from the great loros of plunder. We assert tl at a political organization, repre senting the political principles herein stated, is accessary to redress the grievances of which we complain. Assembled on the anniversary of the birth of the illustrions man who led the first revolution n this continent against oppression, filled with the 6entimen which actuated tnat grand gen eration, we seek to restore the government of 11 e hands of the " plain people," with whom it 'originated. Our doors are open to all points of the con 1 pass. We ask all honest men to join "with and help us. In order to restrain the extortions of aggregate capital, to drive ti e money chaEgers out of the temple to form a perfect union, establish justice. insure uomesiic tranquility, pro viae tor the common defense, promote t he general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity we d ordain and establish the - following platform of principles: First e d eclare the union of the lalor forces f ti e Uniteo states this day accomplished per manent aLd perpetual. May its spirit enter into all hearts of the republic and the uplifting of mankind. Second Wealth belongs to him who created it. Every dollar taken from industry without an equivalent is robbery. If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. The interests of rural and urban labor are the same, their ene mies are identical. PLATFORM. FINANCE. First We demand a national currency safe, sound and flexible, issued by the General Gov ernment only, a full legal tender for all debts, public and private ; &ni that without the use of banking corporations a jut. and equitable and fficieut 11 eans of distribution direct to the peo ple at a tax not to exceed 2 per cent, be provided, as set forth in the Sub-1 reasury plan of the Farmers' Alliam e. or some better system ; also, byv5?,en,s iD discharge of its obligations for public improvements. a. We demand free and unlimited coinage of silver. b. We demand that the amount of circulating medium be speedily increased to not less than JoUpei capita. w-e deinand a. graduated income tax. d. e believe that the money of the country should be kept as much as possible in the hands f the people, and hence we demand all national and State revenue shall be limited to tl e neens- - mary expenses of the government economically and honet-tly administered. 3 e. We demand that postal savings banks be established by the government for the safe de posit of the earnings of the people and to facili tate exchange. i LAND. S. 8INATOB mOM KANSAS. ltmo, cloib - Frlce, 61.00. There is & demand for a comprehensive and authoritative book which shall represent the farmer, and set forth his condition,' the influ- nces surrounding him, and plans and prospects for the future. This book has been written by Hon. W. A. Peffer, who was elected to ths United States Senate from Kansas to succeed Senator Ingalls. The title is Tns Fabmeb's Side, and this indicates the purpose of the work. In the earlier chapters, Senator Peffer de scribes the condition cf the farmer in various parts of the country, and compares it with the condition of men in other callings. He carefully examines the cost of labor, of living, the prices of crops, taxes, mortgages, and rates of interest. gives elaborate tables showing the increase of wealth in railroads, manufactures, banking, and other forms of business, and he compares this with the earnings of the farmer, and also wage-workers in general. In a clear, forcible style, with abundant citations of facts and fig ures, the author tells how the farmer reached his present unsatisfactory condition. Then fol lows an elaborate discussion of " The Way out," which is the fullest and most authoritative pres entation of the aims and views of the Fanners' Alliance that has been published, including full discussions of the currency, the questions of interest and mortgages, railroads, the sale of crops, and other matters of vital consequence. This book is the only one which attempts t cover vco wnoie ground, and it is unnecessary to emphasize its value. - It is a compendium of m. uires, and suggestions which th farmer ought to have at hand. ofts aom. and substantial book Ksherib7,t - ?
