PAID FOR IN AD VANCE. The charge is very small and we cannot afford to take risks or wait the pleasure of persons to pay. Entered at the Post-Office at Oxford second-class mail matter. as OXFORD, N. C. Wednesday, - ! December 3, 1890. THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE. The President's message is out. The President, however, is still in. We wish it were the reverse. It is not within the scope of our work to give it to our readers. If it were it would be a useless sacrifice of space. Those of our subscribers who wish to read it are few and will not be disap pointed. Harrison's head is pretty large in proportion to his body, but it is not large enough for him to (conceive of the magnitude of his partys recent de feat. He insists upon the passage of the Lodge, or force bill, and even has the temerity to advocate the McKinley bill. We did not suppose he would take a gentle hint, but it does seem that hitting a man on the back of the head with a brick would divert his attention - j for a moment at least ! ! He comments on" our undisturbed ... . 1 o peace with foreign countries and espe cially on the closeness of our relation with Mexico, and suggests that our missinn at that nation's ranital be rais ed to the first class. He believes in reciprocity and encouraging the mili tia, but not in the free coinage of sil ver. ; We do not know that it makes much difference with this community what he believes in. It doesn't with us. CLERK OF THE SUPERIOR COURT. - 5 This quasi judicial office is the most responsible trust within the gift of the rkrkiVI rf a rnnn t r Tt ic tVif -1prV m who advises the widow, r provides for straggling waifs of humanity, protects the, rights of the imbecile and orphan and guarantees an honest administra tinn rf HpaH mens' affairs. He is the breakwater between; fractious litigants nnH the nrnhatnr !of all real estate 1 transactions. It is ! solid comfort to , muse over the fact ; that our gallant Iriend. Capt. W. AJ Bobbin, is now comfortably ensconced in the clerk's chair, and that , that office is bomb proof for at least four years. r He and that sterling war horse of honest De mocracy, Capt. T. D. Clement, have the honcr cf being the' only recon structed Democrats who have filled this office. It seems that Dr.: Koch's new 1 erne- dy for consumption is meeting withj some opposition at the hands of French j custom Louse officials. They exclude it on the ground of "unknown com position." We learn that Dr. Koch will endeavor to keep the price of in oculation down so low that none may be too low with consumption to . take advantage of its curative properties. The .New. York War has discpver- ecUthat the foes of Democracy are urging Gov. Hill not to go to the Sen-j ate. New York politics is something that few men beyond the limits of New York understand. We are sorry to have to confess to David that we are not in a position to advise him. '-. The Atlanta Constitution has found wonderful five-year-old boy out in , Nebraska who can give the technical I name of every bone in the .human anatomy with unfaltering exactness, and with a distinctness of pronouncia- tion that would make some of the older ones envious. We had to import this one from Turkey in Asia; the effect of the Mc Kinley bill on it, is not visible to the naked eye. During a recent tempest neither rain, snow nor hail fell, but grains of millet. The inhabitants are housing the grain and grinding it for bread. The old adage of "look twice before you leap," is very appropriate. t This is a concern which, when it comes, comes to stay. Let's have a good, system or none. The next generation will de rive its supply of water from the plant which we are about to build and will have to help do the paying. We are willing to leave the matter to our board of commissioners, feeling assur ed, as we do, that no men or set of men have the welfare of our . commu nity more at heart.
