Entered at: the Post-Office at Oxford second-class mail matter. as OXFORD, N. C. Friday, December 12, 1890. The Richmond limes says that Senator J. W.' Daniel, of Virginia, in a masterly speech in the Senate Tues day on the force bill, "sounded the note of general alarm when he showed that if it ever becomes a law it wil strike a vital blow at the very founda tion of the Republic. At first, under the specious pretence of securing honesty and fair votes in elections, i promises to take charge of the election of the State representatives; then the next step would be Federal supervis ion ot United btates benators, since Senators are as much members of Congress and Federal officers as are Representatives. Thfs would mean nothing more nor less than Federal supervision of the State Legislature who elect United States Senators, and finally the control of the election of the members of the Legislature them - selves." Speaker Reed and his con- federates are capable of wrecking the Republic and building an Empire upon the ruins. The financier of the Raleigh News and Observer explains it in this way.- "One of the conundrums of the hour is wnat nas oecome ot ail tne money which the United States governmer . has paid out of the Treasury in recent months, and the anwser is easy. The people have it: They have made good crops, and having sold such a part of their products as they pleased, have paid their debts and the residue they have put in their pockets. In bad crop years, or when the people are largely in debt, they quickly pay out all the money they receive! and it goes right back into the channels of trade; but this year, after the farmers had paid their debts, they put their surplus money in their pockets, and there it remains." The New York World puts in a good word for Senator Zeb - Vance. It says that "he is too able a man and too experienced a legislator and debater to be spared from Congress. He may not agree with the farmers at all points, but he will do them more good in the Senate than any new man whom they can elect." The majority of white North Carolinians agree fullv with the llorhi, and there is no doubt about Senator Vance succeeding" himself. Many think he will be re-elected by acclamation. The Republican Senators have had a caucus, the practical result of which is that the force bill . will be shelred and some financial measure probably Senator Plumb's free, silver coinage bill will be taken up. Senator Wade Ham pi on is seven ty two years of age. When he saved his State from the Republican cormor rants in 1S76 a grateful people s?ng : "Shout the glad tidings from moun tain to sea; Hampton has triumphed, Carolina is-free!" Now an ungratelul people turn their' backs upon the old hero. The richest man in Europe is worth $50,000,000. There are a half dozen men in the United States worth m re than that sum. Rockafellow's wealth is estimated at $1 25,000,000 and Jay Gould's pile reaches in the vicinity of $100,000,000. , There is some chance ofa bill pass ing this Congress granting copyright to foreign authors.
