Dormitory and Kitchin at State Normal

State Normal and Innustrlal College
discovered In the kitchen of the build
ing devoted to the dormitory room,
laundry, boiler room, cold storage
and heating plant, destroyed that
building, and the large four-story
brick dormitory nearby. The (ire oc
curred at " o'clock this morning.
In the first building the dining
room wcro rooms for one hundred
and fifty girls, and the dormitory
proper has two hundred young 1 i
dies from all parts of the State

portation ami back for girls having
to return home.
College work will begin Monday.

discovered in the kitchen, attention
was turned to emptying the building
before turning in an alarm. If lite
firemen had been on the scene when
the fire was discovered, they could
not have saved the first building.
They could have kept it from spread
ing. Several (Jranville county young
ladies attend this school, but none of
them slept in the burned building.

also forbids owning or keeping them
in possession by a. person under 21
yoars of age.
Mr. Perry, the local manager of the
telephone at Ilocky Mount, accused
one of the lady operators of stealing
some money. As a result the day
operators marched out; their friends
waited on Mr. Ferry and asked him
to resign, which he did. All the la
dles went back, including the accused
whose reputation Is beyond reproach.
The matter created quite a stir for a
while.
The Dispatch says that a party of
Lexington citiz -ns killed 400 robbins
in the cane brakes along Abbott's
creek, bi Davidson county, one night
l ist week. More than 40 persons,
says ihe Dispatch, werehuuting rob
bins the s.'iiiie night and ltls believed
that f.,0000 of the birds were slaugh
tered in that locality that night. The
Salisbury papers report a, similar
slaughter of robbins near that town.
The executive committee of the

a business session at Concord last

annual session of the association

Salisbury will be the starting point
and the North Carolina, editors will

rangements for the body.
Dr. Adams, of Statesvllle, wascall
ed to see Mrs. Holcomb who was
suffering intensely with pain In her
side ami shoulders. I le began apply
ing a. dry cup to her side, aud the
taper extending a little out of the
glass, set tire to her clothing. The
blaze, spread like lightning on account
of her clothing being saturated with
turpentine absorbed from applica
tion which had been made with it.
Dr. Adams smothered the flames
with the bedclothing which took fire
and In his attempt to put them out
he t hrew the burnlugclothlng against
the curtain at a window. This of
course set the curtain on fire and in
his endeavor to extinguish it and
save the house he received the most
serious injuries about the hands.
Other physicians were then called in
and found that Mrs. Holcomb had
been badly burned on both arms,
from the shoulders down around the
body and right limb almost to the
knee. Her wounds were carefully
d ressed and she was made as comfort
ably as possible.
Th State Committee Will Meet in Feb
ruary. Senator Simmons, Chairman of the
Democratic State Committee, is
quoted as saying that he expects
soon to Issue the call of a meeting of
the committee, probably the last of
February, to fix the time and place
for the State Convention. It is un
derstood that the convention will go
to Greensboro again, and if it fol
lows the usual custom In Democratic
campaign years, it will meet the lat
ter part of May. This convention
will not only name delegates to the
national convention, but will also
nominate a full State ticket, from

Charlotte Observer: Mr. Small says
that on Thursday, February 4, the
sub-committee of the committee on
ways and means would give a hear
ing to growers of leaf tobacco. At
this time several pending bills affect
ing the tobacco growers will be con
sidered. Mr. Small says that this
hearing will be an Important one,
and that It would be well for North
Carolina tobacco growers to be rep
resented -here through the associa
tion.
