Cleon and I. There is a great deal of genuine pliiloso phy contained f& the followiug lines. How ranch happier won'd we be, if in our every day life we adopted practically the senti ment of these little verses. They are by Cbabi.es Mackay. Cleon hath a million acres ; Ne'er a one hath I . Cleon dwelleth in a palace : In a cottage I : Cleon hath a dozen fortunes ; Not a penny I : But the poorer of the twain is Cleon, not I. Cleon, true, possesseth acres But the landscape I : Half the charms to me it yieldeth Money can not buy : Cleon harbors sloth and dullness ; Fresh'ning vigor I : He in velvet, I in fustian ; Richer man am I. Cleon is a slave to grandeur ; Free as thought am I : Cleon fees a score of doctors ; Need of nona have I : Wealth-surrounded, care-environed, Cleon fears to die ; Death may come, he'll find me ready Happier man am I. if- ' , Cleon goes no charm in nature ; In a daisy I: Cleon bears no anthems ringing In thesea or sky Nature sings to me forever-r- Earnest listener I : State for st ite, with all attendants, Who would change ? Not I! The South side Kail road The High Bridge. The Petersburg Index of Thursday says : Gen. Mahone, accompanied by a corps' of competent engineejk arrived at Farmvillc, yesterday, mm will at once commence the survey of a route in this direction, as authorized by the stockholders of the company, for the laying of a track by which the Hkh Bridge may be avoided. The coniple tion of such a road and ve under stand the work will be vigorously prosecuted is very much to be desir ed. Among other improvements on this road we may mention the near, ap proach to completion of two fine iron bridges over the James river, after the pattern of the bridge on the Nor folk and Petersburg railroad just be low Petersburg. New rails are-also being rapidly laid along the track at such places as most ly.need them. It is certain that whilst no serious accident ever happened at the High -Bridge, and whilst it may be as safe as any iher part of the road, the Southside road could never become popular: so long as that bridge dis figured it The Duty of a Mother. bho should be firm, gentle, kind, al ways ready to attend to her child She should never laugh at him, at what he does that is cunning; never allow him to think of his looks, ex cept to be neat and clean in all his habits. She should teach him to obev a look: to respect those older than himself; she should never make a command without seeing it is per formed in the right manner. Never speak of a child's fault's or foibles, or repeat his remarks before him. It is a sure way to spoil a child. Never reprove a child when excited, no let yeur tone of voice be raised when cor recting. Strive to inspire love, not dread ; respect not fear. Remember you are tratning and educating a soul for eternity. A Drunkards Will.
