Negro County Agent PLANTING PINES IS A GOOD INVESTMENT Many areas of cut-over land and poor cropland could be put back into productivity by planting them in pines. Some areas are ready for planting now; others will need site pre paration. You can plant pines in open fields or in wooded areas that have had brush and undesirable hardwood removed or destroy ed. This job can be done by cutting, mechanical preparation, chemical treatment, or a com bination of these. Applications and instructions for ordering seedlings can be secured from your County Agents Office. If you plan to plant your seedlings within two weeks after they are delivered, they may be held in the shipping' package provided you do the | following: 1. When seedlings arrive, dip] in water or pour water into, open end of the package. Roll' package on the ground to ] thoroughly wet all the roots. 2 Store the package in ai cool place where there is no danger of freezing. Raise one end of the bundle to allow it to drain. 3. Repeat watering and roll ing process once each week. If you are not going to plant the seedlings within two weeks after receiving them, you should dig a 10 to 12-ln deep V-shaped trench, break open the bundle, and "heel in" the seedlings, tamping the soil into the trench firmly. They need watering only at "heeling in" time. Protect seedlings from ex tremes of heat and cold at all times before they are planted. Entertain At Dinner Mr. and Mrs. O. M.
