Soil Conservation New* Good Cover Crops Will rotect The Farm Pond By NAT B. WHITE A farm pond is an excellent instrument to measure soil erosion on the land draining into the pond. Many pond: have a very short life; the ponds fill with silt in less than 20 years. The accumulation oi silt on the bottom of a pond will show the farmer how much his land is washing and this is often surprising. Where land is cultivated there is invariablly some ero sion. Research has shown that contour cultivation alone will cut soil erosion in half. Good cropping systems that keep the maximum amount of cover growing on the land and re turn a lot of organic matter to the soil go a long way in re ducing erosion. Keeping good cover like pasture or weeds on the land will almost eliminate soil erosion, but heavily graz-1 ed woodland or pasture con- i tribute a great deal of silt in ! a pond below. A pond tbat gets muddy ol ten is a very poor fish- pond Silt that accumulates on the bottom of a pond makes il hard for fish to spawn and is very detrimental. Silt re duces the amount of water stored in a pond and may cause a storage of water for irrigation. Where it is impossi ble to control erosion on the watershed above the pond a diversion may be contructed to divert muddy water out of the pond. Soil Conservation is neces sary to maintain high crop yields, to maintain the land for future generations, to have a sound economic operation on the farm and for many other reasons. If the farm pond is silting in fast it is a sure sign that the watershed above needs some more soil and water conservation prac tices applied. I feel that you, the voters of Warren County, are entitled to know my past record and since time will not permit me to see and talk to each and every one of you personally, i wish to take this opportunity of letting you know something about me and my record: For several years I served as a police officer in the town of Nash ville, N. C., and the city of Rocky Mount, N. C. During that time I in vestigated most every type of crime, both misdemeanor and felonies. I can truthfully say I enjoyed this work very much, but having a desire to go into business for myself, I resigned from the Rocky Mount Police Force in July, 1950, and came to Warren County and opened a restau rant and motel in Norlina. I have been, and still am, owner and operator with the exception of a few months during 1959 while I was away on other business. I am a member of the Norlina Baptist Church. After being out of this type work for approximately 12 years, I still have a strong desire to have a part in this type of work. I feel that my past experience will enable me to do a good job as coroner of this county, should you see fit to give me a chance to serve you in this capacity. I also wish to offer you this letter of recommendation from the Chief of Police of the City of Rocky Mount for your consideration. Your vote and aupporfc^will be greatly appreciated. /-J"*5 Thank ySu;? ?_J - R. G. HUNT The City Of Rocky Mount NORTH CAROLINA MAY 10, 1962 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: This is to certify that Mr. Robert G. Hunt, was a former employee of the Rocky Mount Police Department from September 14, 1939 to July, 1950. Mr. Hunt left the Rocky Mount Police Department for reasons of his own, and during the approximately eleven (11) years that he was employed here, he made a very fine record for himself and our de partment. I always considered Mr. Hunt a very fine officer, especially, in investigations, in which I found him very thorough and fair. Mr. Hunt came to the Rocky Mount Police Department from the Nashville, North Carolina, Police Department, where he also bore an excellent record. While an employee of the Rocky Mount Police Department, he attended various schools and classes, some conducted at the Institute of Government, Chapel Hill, and others where the instructors were furnished by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I always found that Mr. Hunt was eager to learn, and he gave much of his own time attending the Police schools mentioned above. While closely associated with Mr. Hunt during his employment with this department, I found him to be honest, reliable and friendly, and I wish to recommend him for any position that he may be capable of filling.
