News & Society Items Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Rodwell returned last Thursday after an European tour. Mr. and Mrs. David Bear and son of Petersburg, Va., visited Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Wilkes during the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Ellis spent the weekend at their cottage at Nags Head. The Rev. and Mrs. E. W. Baxter are visiting friends in Frankfurt, Ky. Mrs. J. D. Randolph of Kinston was a guest of Mrs. J. T. Harris for several days last week. The Rev. and Mrs. J. M. Stoney and sons visited rela tives in Darlington, S. C., for several days last week. Mrs. T. H. Rooker is visit ing her sons and their fam ilies in Norfolk, Va. Mrs. Anne Baxter and Miss Ellen Baxter of Chapel Hill were here for the weekend. Mrs. W. H. Dameron re turned on Wednesday after visiting Mr. and Mrs. David Hyatt in Waynesville for seve ral weeks. Mr. John C. Gibbs of Dan ville, Va., visited his sister, Mrs. Virginia Pearsall, last week for several days. Miss Evelyn Dillard has been visiting relatives in Richmond, Va., for sometime. Miss Elizabeth Allen is spending several days with relatives in Raleigh. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Ellis and sons, Eddie and Mike, of Cleveland were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Davis. Mr. and Mrs. James Trotter and little son of Reidsville arc guests of Mr. and Mrs. C E. Rodwell. Lt. and Mrs. John Locke Foil of Norfolk, Va., were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Rodgers. Mr. and Mrs. Pryor Rod well, Jr.. visited relatives in Halifax and Williamsburg, Va., on Sunday. Mrs. J. E. Bobbitt and Miss Betsy Byrd Bobbitt spent tbe weekend in Madison with Mr. and Mrs.. Master Walter Blaylock is spending ten days in Wash ington, N. C., with Bill Ed Kidd. Auxiliary Dept. Head Speaks To Local Body Mrs. A. M. Scarborough of Greensboro, department pres ident of the American Legion Auxiliary, presented an inter esting talk on the "Aims and Purposes of the Auxliary," at the regular meeting of the Auxiliary, Unit No. 25, held in the home of Mrs. Scotf Gardner on August 1. The regular opening exer cises were held and the busi ness meeting was presided over by Mrs. Scott Gardner, newly installed president. A letter from the Comman der of the American Legion, S. A. Warlick, was read, stressing the importance of the work to be done in the coming year by botj) organi zations. Refreshments were served to the 18 members and two visitors by the hostess, assist ed by Mrs. W. B. Neal, Mrs. S. M. Gardner and Mrs. Jim my Roberts. Mr. And Mrs. Powell Fele House Guests Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Powell entertained at a dinner on Sunday in honor of their houseguests here for two weeks, Mr and Mrs. W. C. Powell and children, Jimmie, Jackie and Judy, of Denver, Colorado. RICHARD ROY SNEDEGAR M/5S Jeffries Becomes Bride Of Mr. Snedegar Miss Mary Ricks Jeffress, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Fleming Jeffress of Palmer Springs, Virginia, be came the bride of Richard Roy Snedegar, son of Mrs. Annie Stevens Snedegar and the late George Roy Snede gar of Roanoke, Virginia, Sat urday afternoon, August 3 at 4 o'clock, in the Green Memorial Methodist Church in Roanoke. Dr. Theodore E. Landis officiated, using the single ring ceremony. Mrs. Lois Ayers, organist, and the Green Memorial Church Choir, directed by Mrs. Eula Ligon with Elwood Norris as soloist, presented a program of wedding music. The choir sang "O Perfect Love" and "Whither Thou 43*eflt." - Mr. Norris ranf the "Wedding Prayer". The bride entered the church with her father who gave her in marriage. Her floor length gown of imported hand clipped lace over bridal satin was fashioned with a sculptured bodice, long sleeves with callapoints, a deep scoop scallop neckline etched with seed pearls and iredescents. A pointed waist topped a full front skirt, the back circled with eight lace roses fell over a chapel train with scal lop hem. Master Paul Peters son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack A. Peters of Roanoke was ring bearer and carried the ring on a white satin pillow. Mrs. Wellford W. Inge, Jr., of Cincinnati, Ohio, was ma tron of honor. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Robert L. Hundley of Richmond Virginia and Mrs. D. David Ringley ol Roanoke, Virginia, former classmates of the bride. The attendants wore dresses ol ballerina length, fashioned ol silk organza and chantillj lace In autumn pink, the full skirt front with three sill! bows, a basque bodice with bracelet length sleeves and deep scoop neckline of match* ing lace. A circular veil fell from a clip of double pink silk roses. They carried white lace fans showered with pink roses and baby's breath. Mr. James A. Hancock, brother-in-law of the groom, was beot man. Groomsmen were James H. Jeffress of South Hill, brother of the bride; D. David Ringley, Charles R. Carper, and Win fred H. Hart, Jr., all of Roanoke. The mother of the bride wore a sheath of silk organza and lace in Dior blue with matching accessories and a purple throated orchid. The mother of the bridegroom wore a street-length dress of blue lace with matching ac cesories and a purple throat ed orchid. Mrs. Snedegar is a graduate of Mars Hill Junior College and the Medical College of Virginia with a B.S. Degree in Nursing. She is now com pleting her third year 'as instructor in Maternity Nurs ing at the Lewis-Gale Hos pital School of Nursing, Roa noke. Mr. Snedegar is a grad uate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute with bachelor of science degree in electrical and mechanical engineering and is a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity. He is employed by Appalachian Power Company of Roanoke. Following the ceremony, the bride's parents entertain ed at a reception in the Church Social Hall for all guests attending. Presiding at the guest book was Mrs. W. L Gunter of Salt Lake City, Utah, sister of the groom. The guests were greeted by Mrs. Mary Steele and led to the line which was composed of the wedding party and the parents of the bride and groom. The table was covered with a pink satin cloth with the center arrangement of white glads, white mums, pink roses in arrangements of the brides bouquet, silver candlebras with tall pink candles. White wedding bells decorated the hall. Punch was poured by Miss es Vicki Ruggeri, Jeannette Harwell, Janice Walker, and Mrs. Linwood DeWhitt. The wedding cake was served by Misses Eloise Caldwell and Sue Scott. Party sandwiches, cake, mints and other dain ties were served. For traveling, Mrs. Snede gar wore a blue suit with matching accessories and her corsage was the one lifted from her bridal bouquet. Mr. and Mrs. Snedegar left for a two week wedding trip to Bermuda. Upon return, the couple will reside at 1815 Westover Avenue, S. W., Roanoke. MRS. DOROTHY EVANS 1 SMITH Mrs. Dorothy Smith Receives Diploma Mrs Dorothy Evans Smith graduated from the Peters burg General Hospital School of Nursing, Petersburg. Va . on Sunday, August 4 During oxercises held in the First Baptist Church. Pet ersburg, the Rev. E. Glenn Womack delivered the ad dress. The class of 18 stu dents was presented by Miss Bernice D. Skehan. RN, di rector of nurses education. Diplomas were awarded by George Bolinski, administrator of the hospital. Graduate pins : werde awarded by Miss June Burch, RN, of the school fac Miss Person Returns From Workshop Miss Emily Burt Person has resumed ber work at John Graham High School after at tending a two weeks Invita tional Workshop on the "Guidance of Youth," in De troit, Michigan. The workshop, sponsored by the U. S Office of Edu cation, was heid at the Mer: rell-Palmer School in Detroit. Miss Person was among the 25 participants in the United States attending. Mr. Brickhouse To Be Guest Minister The Rev. R. E. Brickhouse will be the guest minister at the 11 o'clock worship hour at the Warren Plains Baptist Church on Sunday morning. His topic will be "Our Noble Young People." The Rev. Mr Brickhouse will preach in the absence of the pastor, the Rev. W. H. Puckett, Jr., who is away with his family. ulty.
