THURSDAY, IUNE 18, 1970 NUMBER 25 MISS PAMELA POWELL Miss Powell President Of State Organization Miss Pamela Powell, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Powell of Warrenton wastiact ed to the top post In the State as president of the North Caro lina Division, Children of the Confederacy, at the thirty-third annual Convention, at the Velvet Cloak, Raleigh, on June 8-10. As chapter president, Miss Powell has served as State His torian the past yeaf, makingthe North Carolina Division Scrap Book and also served on the Division Executive Board as chairman of the history com mittee. On the Convention com mittee, Mi_s Powell read the dedication of the program, and gave the reports of the courtesy committee, the committees of which she was chairman. She also gave the report for the Warren County Chapter, C.of C. Mrs. M. P. Powell, President of the Warren County Chapter, United Daughters of the Con federacy, accompanied Miss Powell to Raleigh. Also attend ing were Misses Kathryn My rick and Patricia Odom who served as pages. Timothy Fetzer, Retiring Di vision President, presided over the Convention, with Missjanle Martin, Mocksville, Division Director. Special guests were Mrs. G. A. Moore, Jr., Wil mington, PresyJent of the North Carolina Division, U.D.C.; Mrs. Pansy Fetzer, Shelby, ex-pres ident, N. C. Division, UDC, and former Vice - President of the General Organization UDC; (See POWELL, Page 3) MRS. JACK HARRIS Mrs. Harris Selected As 'Woman Of The Year' Mrs. Jack Harris was chosen by the Warrenton Junior Wo man's Club as "Woman of the Year" at the club's recent an nual dinner meeting at the War ran Plaza Inn. Announcementot Mrs. Harris's selection was made by Miss Deborah Brown. The award is presented each year to the all around best mem ber and the one who contribut ed the most to her club. Mrs. Harris was presented a silver tray with her name and year engraved on the back. She keeps the tray until the next Woman of tlw Year is chosen. Mrs. Harris was also pre sented a cymbidlan orchid sent to the meeting by her husband and ptnoed oo her by Mrs. Bobby Blatfock. Mrs. Robert Shoffner, assist ant State Junior Director, w?l the guest speakei. presented by Mrs. Jack Harris, Mrs. Shoffner spoke on the charac teristics of a member and her contribution to her club. She Illustrated her theme by read ing a poem, "Do YOO Just Belong?" Mrs. Earl Halthcock, presi dent, presided over the meet ing and Mrs. Bill Field gave the devotions. GRADUATES Miss Scogfln Jones, daugh ter ot Dr. and Mr*. Rufus S, Jones of Warrenton, recently graduated from St. Margaret's School at Tappahannock, Va. Population Of Region K 131,923; Shows Decline Region K, comprising the counties of Vance, Granville, Franklin, Person and Warren, In the order of population, has a total population of 131. 923, according to preliminary 1970 census report released last week by District Manager Donald R. Payne. In 1950 these five counties had a total population of 143, 141; and in 1960 a population of 139,913. Only Vance County showed a population gain over 1960: al though Vance, Granville and Person counties show more population in 1970 than they had in 1950. Franklin and Warren coun ties showed population losses In both 1960 and 1970. In 1960 Granville was the largest county In Region K with a population of 33,110 but lost 773 in the decade, while Vance gained 536 to take first place with 32,538. Person grew from 24,361 In 1950 to 26,394 in 1960, but lost 831 In 1970 with a popu lation of 25,563. Franklin's population In 1950 was 31,341: 28,755 in 1960, and Two New Members Added To List Of Warrenton Lions A Democratic nominee for county commissioner and a John Graham school teacher be came the newest members of the Warrenton Lions Club at their regular meeting held in the Lions Den on Friday Night. Peete Jones, of Elberon, newly elected county commis sioner on the Democratic ticket and Gerald poplin, a member of the John Graham faculty, were Inducted into the club by past president, J. Howard Daniel. Poplin was sponsored by Lion Fred Bartholomew and Jones was sponsored by Lion Fred Hurst. In the absence of President Scott Gardner, who was in a Henderson hospital, vice presi dent Jack Harris presided. Mu sic was led by Lion Dick Miles. Lion Billy Lanier said the grace and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lion Harris. Lion X was Lion House and Lion Joe Gilbert won the dollar which he p sented to the con vention fund. A "Lion of the year" com mittee was appointed to pick the most outstanding Lion for ser vices rendered during the past year to be announced at the next regular meeting on Friday, June 26. Mack Bullock was nam ed chairman of this committee with Lion Fred Bartholomew and Lion Will Fowler other members of the committee. Secretary Clyde Whttford gave a short report of the State Convention, held in Durham on Monday and Tuesday of last week, which was attended by a number of Warrenton Lions. June 30 Deadline For Filing Acreage Reports The deadline for farmers who carry the Federal All-Risk Crop Insurance to report their planted acreage Is June 20, Mrs. Lucille B. Buchanan, office representative, said yesterday. She said that those who have not filed their re ports are urged to do so at once. The office Is located in the Warren County Courthouse and Is open on Tuesdays and Thurs days of each week from Bt30 a. m. untU 1:30 p. m. The telephone number Is 837-3780. Drake To Work This Sunnier At Hospital Mr. and Mrs. Roddy Drake, Jr., will spend this summer In Warrenton with their parents, Mr. and Mr*. W. A. Mile* and Mr. and Mrs. Wilton Drake. Drake, who to currently a student In Medical school at the University of Morth Carolina * Chapel Hill, will be working at Warren General Hospital umfcr 26,303 In 1970. Warren's population In 1950 was 23,539; 19,652 In 1960 and 15,292 In 1970. Changes In the five counties during the past 20 years were as follows: Vance lost 99 between 1950 and 1960 but gained 536 for a total gain of 437. Granville gained 1317 be tween 1950 and 1960, but lost 873 between 1960 and 1970, for a total gain of 434 since 1950. Person County gained 2,033 between 1950 and 1960, but lost 831 betweenl960 and 1970 for a total gain of 1202 over the past 20 years. Franklin County lost2586be tween 1950 and 1960 and 2452 between 1960 and 1970 for a total of 5,038 during the 20-year period. Warren County lost 3887 be tween 1950 and 1960 and 4350 between 1960 and 197 Of or a total loss of 8,237 during the two decades. The five-county region lost 3228 between 1950 and 1960 and 7,990 between 1960 and 1970 for a total loss of 11,218 dur ing the 20-year period. Man Is Badly Hurt When He Is Struck By Car At Night A 22-year-old colored man, Horace Evans, was taken to Maria Parham Hospital Satur day at 11 p. m. by the Warren County Rescue Squad with ser ious Injuries suffered when he was struck by an automobile near Allen Kimball's home near the Virginia line. Sheriff Clarence Davis said Monday morning that Evans was In a stat? of shock, that he had received lacerations about the head, that the flesh had been torn from his right arm and that his right hip and right leg had been broken. The man was found after Tommle Alexander of Virginia had gone to a nearby home and told the family that he had struck something In the road and asked that he be accompanied to the scene, Sheriff Davis said. Alexander was arrested by Patrolman Bill Joyce and charged with driving without an operator's license and with drunk driving. Mrs. Robertson To Be C. Of C. Secretary Mrs. Hoy Pat Robertson was appointed as secretary to the newly formed Warrenton Cham ber of Commerce at the June meeting of the Chamber held at the Warrenton Lion's Den. Mrs. Robertson's office will be open the first week of July in the old barbershop In the Peyton Rogers building on Main Street and her hours will be from Mon day through Friday from 9 a. m. to 1 p. m. The chamber quarters were offered by Peyton Rogers until Jan. 1, 1971, without cost. The offer was accepted by the cham ber with a motion to renovate the office with free labor and free materials. Anyone who would like to donate time or office fixtures, such as pictures, chairs, or anything that can be used in an office, Is asked to contact W. A. Miles , chairman of the reno vation committee. Kear ney was llty from t*T home working at the time at the death bat that the children ware at Costs To Be Shared City School Board Not To Appeal Court Decision The War rent on City School Board, meeting in joint session with the board of town com missioners on Monday night, voted not to appeal the decision of a Federal District Court declaring the act of the Leg islature creating Warrenton as a special school district uncon stitutional. The act of tlic Legislature creatine Warrenton as <t special school district also created Scotland Neck and Lake Gaston Littleton as special school districts. Whether or not Scotland Neck will appeal ihe decision is not known According to a news story in The Littleton Obser I ver last week, the Lake i Gaston-Littleton District wUl ^ aj)peal 11case to the Federal Circuit Court. Fred Hurst, James Kerr and Fred Bartholo mew, who was named an ex Four Killed, Two Hurt In Wreck Four persons were killed and i two hospitalized in a single car | accident nine-tenths of a mile I north of Norlina at 9:10 p. m j last Thursday. Dead are: Vance Lee Brown, 19, driver of the 1959 Chevrolet involved in the wreck: Alfretta Brown, 19, his wife: j Corlesa Brown, their 17? months-old daughter: Burnett a Jones. 16. Thurmilla Jones, 9, was taken I to Maria Parham Hospital in i Henderson and Theressa Jones, | 15, was taken to Warren Gen- j eral Hospital. All occupants of the wreck ed car were residents of Nor- I Una area. Highway Tooper Wallace j Brown said the accident oc curred when the car driven by Vance Lee Brown, traveling at a high rate of speed, ran off the road and crashed headon into a large oak tree. He said that tire marks showed that the car travelled 342 feet before striking the tree and bouncing seven more feet. Brown said the engine was driven almost to the front seat of the car, the steering wheel was touching the top of the car and the left front tire was two inches from the brake pedal. Brown said the investigation was being continued. Members of the city school board, prior to a caucus in which their decision was de termined, expressed their re | luctance to give up the fight for a city school system, their doubts that an appeal would be effective and their unwilling ness to spend any more money for what appears to be a hope less cause. The commissioners also went on record as saying that they would not appeal the case, but agreed to pay their pro rata cost of expenses incurred In the attempt toestablish War renton as a city school district. The two boards were in agreement as to the plan for paying the expenses on a ratio basis, but differed over the methods of payment by the town. It was agreed that the some $16,000 expended by the City school board, the major part of which was for attorney fees, was a joint responsibility of the two boards. It was agreed that the total cost should be divided by the total number of pupils to de termine the per pupil cost, and that the town would pay this (See NO APPEAL, page 2) Day Camp Program To Begin On June 22 A summer feeding program (day camp) will be held this summer in Warren County, be ginning on June 22, sponsored by Economic Development Cor poration for 250 needy chil dren, ages 4-14. The program, which Is com pletely free, will provide break fast, lunch and medical care. Each day there will be a sche duled program of activities in day care recreation and/or crafts. Children of families receiv ing assistance from the De partment of Social Services or Food Stamps are eligible to at tend. Those not receiving these assistances are also eligible if they are in need because of low income. Centers where these pro grams will be conducted are: Soul City, Hecks Grove, Pine Grove and St. Stephen. All interested persons are asked to register at one of these centers this week. Portrait Presented To Warren Library A portrait of Victoria Louise dark (Mrs. A. S. Pendleton) has been presented to Warren County Memorial Library by Mrs. Pendleton's grandchil dren, Courtonay Whitaker, Syl bert Pendleton and Fablus B. Pendleton. This portrait was formerly owned by Mrs. Katherlne P. Arrlngton, Mrs. Pendleton's daughter. Tit* portrait hung for many years in the Arrlng ton residence and passed un der Mrs. Katherlne Conway's will to the benefactors of the library.
