. Bike Riding Is Scheduled At Northside A bike-a-thon sponsored by Mrs. Martha Reavis for benefit of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been scheduled for April 24. Registration will begin at 9 a. m at Northside School in Norlina. The event is open to all youngsters and adults who wish to help support the fight against cystic fibrosis, the number one genetic killer of children and young adults in the United States. There is at present no cure for the disease, which affects approximately one in 1,800 births. According to Mrs. Reavis, those who wish to participate in 'he bike-athon should obtain sponsor sheets from any school in Norlina. Participants should then solicit pledges from their relatives, friends, or neighbors for each mile they ride. The total amount to be collect- > ed from their sponsors after the event is based on the number of miles each rider completes. Prizes will be awarded to the riders who raise the most funds. For further information about the bike-a-thon contact Mrs Reavis at 456-3783. Plan Furnishings For A New Look Whether you have a new home, or simply want to give a new look to your present one, furniture arranging is important. But it is easier to do it first on paper and push the furniture around later. "Floor space is already organized to some extent by partitions and architectural features of your house. Your task is to further organize this space to suit the activities that will take place in each room," says Dr. Glenda Herman, extension housing specialist at North Carolina State University. To plan your room on graph paper, first draw the I rooms to scale, allowing I one-quarter inch per foot. I Be sure to indicate the I architectural details, such I as windows, doors and I fireplace. The make furniture I models to scale and you are ready to start placing I the furniture in the room. "The conversation group I is usually the starting point I in the living area; the I dining group in the dining I room and the sleeping I group in the bedroom. I Once the main arrange- I ment is carefully worked I out, other groupings can be I arranged," the specialist I explains. Remember that the real | rooms will have three I dimensions and sometimes I an arrangement that looks I good on paper may not be I balanced properly when I the height of the furniture I is considered. I To avoid such problems, draw the side wall and I furniture elevations the I same way as you did the I floor plan. I Furniture groupings I play a major role in a I room's capacity to adapt to I different situations. I "Much of today's furniture | is designed to be versa- I tile," Dr. Herman explains. "It can be shifted about, looks nice from all sides and may play several roles.
