Several members of the Winston
Salem bar will go to Raleigh next
Monday to attend the hearing before
the Supreme Coutt it. the case of B.
C. Tavis, who recently passed exami
nation before that tnbunal and would
have been granted license to practice
law but for object loos filed by Wat
son, Buxton & Watson, Manly & Hen
dren, Lindsay Patfison and Geo. P.
Pell. These lawyjrs allege that Mr.
Tavis is not a fit person to enter the
profession. The specific charge lodg
ed against him Is that for two years
he has been engage! ir. lending mon
ey to poor and ignorant people and
charging a usurious late of Interest.
One affidavit made by a colored man,
alleges that ho bor.owed money from
Mr. Tavis and paid i.LWi per cent. The
charges were filed with, the Supreme
Court on Saturday before Mr. Tavis
stood examination.
Depositions were taken before

ing. Mr. Tavis, w'.io has affidavits as
to his character, is represented by
