THE ZEBU LON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CAROLINA, FRIDAY, JULY NINETEENTH, 1935 Wallace is Czar of i U.S. Road Money It would be hard to say who is | the most powerful man in the na- 1 tional administration, but the re cent arrangement whereby Secre- 1 tary of Agriculture Wallace is giv-l en complete control of the federal highway funds puts him in the run ning for the most powerful. Rules approved by the President permit Mr. Wallace to go over the heads of state highway commissions and deal directly with towns and coun ties in the allocation of the hun dreds of millions of federal high way money. Textile Strike At St Pauls Several hundred employees of the cotton mill at St. Pauls, Robe son county, are out on strike. The Record Publishing Company Commercial Printers ZEBULON, NORTH CAROLINA j FARM NOTES By T. H. LeCROY | In most cases it is best to throw j old hens into a moult at this sea ! son of the year by taking them off mash and feeding corn. That will i put most hens back into laying ! during the late fall and early win ter when egg prices are generally better. As soon as the hens com -1 plete moulting, they should be fed laying mash and if they fail to come out of the moult rapidly enough, a wet mash of the laying ration should be fed in the middle of the day. When hens become infected with chicken pox or sorehead, it proves expensive to the commercial poul tryman. Now is the best time to t vaccinate chickens for pox. The cost is small and the benefits may i be great. Care should be exercised at this 1 time of year with work-stock to prevent colic. Mules and horses should not be fed as heavily on corn now that less work has to be done with them. Workstock need I much less heat producing feed when they are not working. Oats are an excellent feed for work stock as a maintenance ration. For those who are interested, budding of apples, peaches, pears and pecan? should be done between now and September. Buds of the tree from which you wish to get more fruit should be placed in a T cut in the bark on the tree you wish to bud into and tied with a string. More buds should be put into the tree than you wish to leave and the tree into which you are budding need not be cut back now but later when some of the buds start growing Badly diseased stalks of tobacco should be pulled up and removed from the field to prevent in so far as possible the spreading of the disease from carrying over into next year. Fall gardens should be planted as soon as possible. Early planting of fall vegetables may be the dif ference between success and fail ure. Processing Faxes Unconstitutional? A federal district court judge at Boston has ruled that the process ing taxes levied under the AAA are unconstitutional. Senator Bailey voted against the processing taxes when first pre sented, declaring that they were unconstitutional. Dries Appeal Case In Vance County A group of dries have arranged appeal the recent ruling of Judge W. A. Devin in the Vance county liquor election case. Judge Devin expressed the opinion that the Pas quotank act was constitutional and permitted Vance to vote on the is- I sue of the county operating liquor j stores. The election was held and the advocates of legal liquor won | by a substantial margin. Stores are being opened in Vance and other and the "dries” don’t like it.
