NARRATIVE REPORT OF THE WAKE COUNTY HEALTH DE PARTMENT FOR JULY, 1937. In 1917, two years before the Wake County Health Department was established by a special act of the General Assembly, one citizen of Raleigh, interested in the pre vention of tuberculosis, offered $25,000 toward the construction of a tuberculosis sanatorium if Wake County w’ould vote a bond issue of SIOO,OOO. An election was called, and the people were given an op portunity to vote on the issue, but it was defeated. The vote was against a total registration. In that year, 1917, according to the figures issued by the Bureau of Vital Sta tistics of North Carolina, there were 105 deaths from pulmonary tuberculosis; white 36, colored 69. In 1936, the County Commission ers of Wake County, the City Com missioners of Raleigh, and the WPA oficials agreed, and signed a contract, to construct, on county owmed property, near the County Home, Whitaker Mill Road, Ral eigh, N. C., a tuberculosis sanator ium for the treatment of tubercu losis cases who cannot provide it for themselves. The sanatorium is now open for both white and col ored tuberculosis patients. At best it can serve only a few of the tu berculous patients of Wake Coun ty, who should be hospitalized. To prevent and to control tuber culosis, hospitalization is essential. It is essential for the patient’s wel fare, for the welfare of his family, and for others that he may be as sociated with. We trust that the Wake County Tuberculosis Sana torium will serve a useful place for both patients and for contacts. It is more important in this day and time to prevent cases from oc curring than it is to cure an indi vidual case, especially, when a cure cannot be effected. Limited as it is in bed-capacity, it should not be, necessarily, limit ed in its educational influence for the people of Wake County. We ex pect to hold weekly clinics for the purpose of examining contacts who have been closely associated with tuberculosis cases during past years. If this sanatorium can serve, even in a limited way, to bring the large number of people in Wake County, who have been closely as sociated wdth open cases of tuber culosis, under medical supervision, either though clinics, held at the sanatorium, or by local physicians in their offices, it will serve in a large capacity, a most useful pur pose. During the past twenty years the tuberculosis death-rate has been cut approximately in half. There were only 61 deaths from tubercu losis, w T hite 28, colored 33, in Wake County, in 1936. Tuberculosis is a preventable disease. If we further prevent cas es from occurring and deaths to follow, years later, we must, so far as possible, isolate the open cases, either in homes or in sanatoria, use every known precautionary method to prevent contacts from becoming infected and, then, have frequent examinations of contacts that the disease may be found in its earliest possible stage, and proper treat- Hey!
