Friday, July 16,1948 Showers Break Long Tar Heel Drought Heavy showers yesterday after noon, coming on the heels of a five-hour rainfall Wednesday night, increased prospects of good crops in this section. Nearly half an inch of rain fell early yester day morning, according to the U. S. Weather Bureau Station at Ra leigh-Durham airport, where .47 inch of precipitation was reported. A long drought was broken on Tuesday afternoon when a cold front blew into North Carolina from the midwest, accompanied by about one-fourth inch of rain. Slight showers Wednesday ac counted for .06 inch precipitation in Zebulon. The showers Wednesday night were general over North Carolina as were yesterday’s rains. Areas hardest hit by the dry weather, according to the Department of Agriculture, were the Archer Lodge section of Johnston County, the Stantonsburg section of Wil. son County, and the Neuse River section of Wake County. Many local farmers are now plantmg late gardens, taking full advantage of the rains. Zebulon lawns are already looking green again, as contrasted with the brown appearance of the past month. Two Girls Featured In Camping Article Joellen Gill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irby Gill, and Ruth Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Vance Brown, were featured in a full page article on Crabtree Creek State Park which appeared in the July 11 issue of the News and Observer. Joellen and Ruth were among the Wake-Raleigh Girl Scouts which spend some time at the camp. The feature article described the facilities of the park, including the 42 miles of trails which wind over the 5,200 acres which make up the park. Grills and tables and benches are scattered among the trees around the main picnic area, none of them too close together. A pump in the center of the area provides a supply of drinking water. Bjork's Tips (Continued from Page 4) Lawyers play upon the weaknes ses of such characters, avoiding direct evidence, and assuming the role of pseudo-artists by painting characters involved in the case as the vilest snake, or the purest flower. Many tirades have been leveled at American juries by cartoonists who depict eleven goggle-eyed gents popping their eyes at a neat ankle under sheer hose while the distressed maid daubs one eye with a tiny perfumed hanky, and winks at her lawyer with the oth er. Even the fatherly judge leans over to console her, and a not too faint wolfish gleam is upon his face. There ought to be some sort of a questionnaire for every person who is asked, or wishes to sit in judgement on his fellow-man. Very definitely food can be con taminated by an infected person and act as a medium through which the infection may be spread. But, for emphasis, let me state what has been repeated time and time again: germs and viruses which cause communicable diseas es come from people, either sick or wtell, and from people these germs and viruses are carried by some means to other people—some of whom are susceptible to the dis eases and develop them. Briefly stated, the public should avoid contact with crowds or groups of people; travel should be restricted to that which seems to be absolutely necessary; fatigue should be advoided—rest is most COME IN AND SEE HOW THE SENSATIONAL NEW Westinghouse saves ;10 gallonswater a load \ I ° n 'y Westlnghouie V 1 | \ Laundromat V \ Automatic Washer >\ 3 ul| MWfR 9>ves you the new T WAIK $/||/fR I ' CUB WATfR CONSUMPTION I \ T 0 THt BONE I INSTALLS ANYWHERE! irr lie ponur NO VIBRATION!
