Friday, September 16,1949 FIRST BALE! The first 1949 bale of cot ton ginned in this community was reported to the Record Monday, September 12. It was ginned by the Wakelon- Home gin for Ivey Narron and Herman Maden. Cotton Dusting Plan Includes Air Work County Agent Says By John L. Reitzel Much of the cotton throughout Wake County has obtained an un usually large growth as a result of the excessive rain and also heavy boll weevil infestation. This fact makes it advisable for farmers who do have unusually large cotton to defoliate their cot ton by the use of 30 to 25 pounds of Areo Cyanamid per acre. This cyanamid may be put out by horse drawn equipment, tractor dusters and airplanes. However, in many instances the cotton has fallen down to such an extent that heavy damage will be caus ed by applying by tractor or horse drawn equipment, therefore, ar rangements have been made through the County Agents Of fice to have this material put on by plane. We have Mr. Earnest Coble, the pilot who did some dusting work in this area in 1947, to do this work. Applications for this ser vice should be made by the far mer direct to Mr. Coble who will be stationed at the Raleigh Mu nicipal Airport located on High way 15A or to the County Agents Office. Zebulon farmers can participate in this program bv contacting J. Raleigh Alford at the Zebulon Gin. It is again emphasized that where farmers have a very ex cessive growth on their cotton that they will find it economical to take the leaves off by the use of Areo Cyanamid. This will allow the sunlight to enter the cotton, thus reducing boll weevil action, corn worm action and also hasten the maturity of cotton so it will open within a few weeks.
