Page Two Communism or Civil Liberties? It was quite a shock to me when I read in the Tuesday morning Raleigh News and Observer the statement made by Paul Green, author of the Lost Colony and the Common Glory, regarding having all University of North Carolina instructors make a declaration as to whether they were now, or had ever been Communists, before they can become a member of the facul ty. Green says “One of the most precious principles of our Ameri can way of life is academic free dom. To cripple or hinder a teach er or scholar in the free exercise of his intelligence and imagination by loyalty oaths and sectarian as sertions of faith is an affront to his dignity as a teacher and an assault on his rights as a free man. “The recent action of the admin istration of the University of N. C. at Chapel Hill in requiring a simon-pure political clearance for teachers to be promoted or em ployed in that institution is an in vasion of their prerogative and should not be tolerated. The trust ess should take immediate action to see that it is annulled.” All of which is a lot of high sounding phraseology which causes one to wonder if he favors com munism and approves of it being taught to the youth of our country. All are subjects of Moscow and are slaves to do the bidding of the Kremlin. Everyone knows the Communists want to overthrow our form of Government and any one who wishes to do that is a traitor to his country and should be dealt with accordingly, instead of being allowed to teach others his line of thought. It has long been talked by dif ferent ones that the University was a hot bed of Communists. Phillips Market & Grocery The Zebulon Record didn’t seem to worry much about it until recently. And now, when something is trying to be done some people start howling about “Academic Freedom,” which leads us to believe that what has been said might be true. The youth of this state should not have to be subjected to such teaching during their formative and impressionable years, and the people of North Carolina should see that it is not done. When a man teaches a phil osophy which is contrary to the concepts of our government, that is stretching the idea of “Academic Freedom” a little too far. —Mrs. C. S.
