Friday, April 13, 1951 MRS. THEO. B. DAVIS This, That , & the Other Until this spring I never saw plantbeds in town. Where I grew up they were always some distance from the house, preferable on a southern slope, and before seed were sowed the beds were thor oughly burned to kill all vegeta tion that might have been in the soil. In addition, the ashes left from burning the logs and brush piled on the ground added to its fertility. I can see why, if watering be came necessary, having one’s plants close to a pipeline and fau cet is a great help. And I was told that a big reason for having beds in town is to protect the plants from thieves, many farmers Laving lost heavily by being rob bed of most of what they hau. I suppose another advantage is that tobacco fields will be all set in time for plantbeds to be used as garden space. • Seeing those canvas-covered plots reminded me of the only time I ever “dropped plants” for pay. I was ten years old. An older girl and I had an offer of real cash for a day’s work, though our employer was rather doubtful of my ability to keep ahead of a fast planter. On my mettle, I did my level best all day. Determin ed not to fall behind, I managed to keep ahead of all the other droppers and was given the priv ilege of providing plants for the fastest planter on the place. That was one good day’s work, if I do say it after all these years. And at nightfall I was paid a shiny quarter. It seemed like riches to me and I was blissfully happy, though achingly tired, till I learn ed the other girl had been paid thirty-five cents for that day, merely because she was older than I. My work had been as good, and I had done as much or more than she, since she had not been spurred on by pride. This experience may be the rea son for my unshakable conviction that it is most often unfair to pay wages by the hour or day without regard for what is accomplished during the time. If some one else can get more done than I can, he or she deserves more pay; but if I keep up with any one else, and do the job as well our pay should be the same. • Son Ted brought me a copy of the Anchorage Daily News of An chorage, Alaska, and I’ve found profitable entertainment in its col umns. It is an eight-page paper and costs ten cents a copy. It claims complete coverage of local and international news. It has Drew Pearson’s column, Blondie, Moon Mullins, Dick Tracy, the Lone Ranger, Henry, and L’il Ab ner, with two more strips of char acters strangers to me. The local Red Cross was beginning a drive to raise $21,989, the first feature being a kick-off breakfast for workers. There was some trou ble in the schools, but many teachers were petitioning that the superintendent be retained. City Council meeting was postponed be cause a quorum was not to be had. The court had to deal with two men on morals charges, one who had obtained city funds by fraud, and two who had robbed a taxi- TIPP-LON CAFE We prepare suppers for special neetings guaranteed satisfactory. All in all, T really feel that Anchorage, Alaska, is a place I’d like to visit, if only to drop in and sit till bedtime. I’d see many things different from here, but not too different. If only they’d finish that highway to Alaska, so we wouldn’t have to go clear across the United States and then make a long journey by boat to reach our neighbors’ homes!
